FORKS — The Class 1A Forks girls basketball team opened the season with a one-point thriller over 2A North Olympic Peninsula rival Sequim in nonleague action Wednesday night.
Junior Casey Williams scored 12 points as the Spartans won 31-30.
“The kids played very hard,” Forks coach Kris Wilmarth said.
“It was a good game.”
Williams, who was just named to the All-Peninsula volleyball team this past week, earned a double-double in the game as he grabbed 12 rebounds to go with her 12 points.
She also was 3-for-3 shooting from the outside.
Guard Terra Sheriff-Penn added eight points and nine rebounds for Forks while Jillian Raben dished out six assists.
Alexas Besand, a sophomore, led Sequim with nine points.
The game went back-and-forth with Sequim leading 8-6 at the end of one period and the teams tied at 16-all at halftime.
The Spartans took a 25-21 lead going into the fourth quarter.
Forks will not play again until Dec. 5 when it takes on North Beach in nonleague action.
Saturday’s game at Neah Bay was moved to Dec. 10.

SEQUIM — The Class 2A Wolves knocked off the 3A Spartans for the second year in a row Wednesday night, riding a 25-point night from senior Corbin Webb in their first game of the season.
“The first half of basketball was some of the best basketball I’ve seen since I’ve been here,” Sequim coach Greg Glasser said.
“I was just really proud of the way our kids played. They battled hard, against that type of pressure that [Bainbridge] brings. I was really happy with that.
“Corbin did some great things for us, but it really was a team effort.”
Webb matched offense with Bainbridge shooting guard Chris Bell, who finished with a game-high 28 points on the night.
Sequim’s Jayson Brocklesby added 16, while center Frank Catelli had seven points in his first varsity action in two years.
The Wolves jumped out to a 18-7 first-quarter lead on the Metro League foes, then held on to that edge the rest of the night.
Sequim (1-0 overall) will host Olympic in its first Olympic League game of the season tonight.

CHEHALIS — Senior 6-foot-8 Easton Napiontek started his high school basketball career on the right foot.
Napiontek, a football and baseball standout, sparked the Roughriders to the nonleague victory with 18 points, 15 rebounds and three blocked shots.
Port Angeles led 32-26 at halftime and never looked back.
“We turned teh ball over 21 times that allowed easy transition buckets for them to start the second half,” coach Wes Armstrong said.
“We definitely got to do a better job taking care of the basketball. We need to work on our consistency and learn how to knock our opponents out.”
But on the other hand, “a win on the road is something we can certainly build on,” Armstrong said.
The Riders open Olympic League play tonight against league favorite Kingston.
