FORKS — The Forks girls basketball team notched its first win of the season behind 17 points from Jillian Raben against Tenino on Friday night.
Raben scored 11 of her 17 points — as well as 11 of Forks’ 17 points — in the second quarter, including three 3-pointers to spark the Spartans to the 42-21 victory.
The Spartans outscored the Beavers 17-3 in the quarter to take a 27-10 lead into intermission.
“Offensively, we didn’t shoot very well the second half,” Forks coach Al Scheibner said.
“The good thing was we had lots of open looks and played very well defensively.”
Scheibner lauded the post defense of Sassy Price, Erin Weekes, Casey Williams and Mercedes Flores.
Tenino only scored eight points on field goals. The other 13 points came from the foul line.
“It was a physical game,” Scheibner said.
“I was extremely proud of the girls for following our game plan, shooting when they were open and particularly defending [the post].
“An all-around great team effort in getting our first league and season win.”
Terra Sheriff-Penn, Courtnie Paul and Price all contributed six points apiece.
Forks (1-3, 1-8) next plays at Neah Bay on Tuesday.

JOYCE — Catherine Youngman hit three first-half 3-pointers to lead the Loggers to a North Olympic League win over the Bruins on Friday night.
Youngman’s shooting helped Crescent establish a 28-12 halftime lead that Clallam Bay was unable to significantly chip into in the last two quarters.
Youngman finished with a game-high 12 points. Jandi Frantz contributed nine points and Kellie Belford and Lauren Hartley both finished with eight.
Jeddie Herndon and Kenna Welever both had 11 points to lead the Bruins. All of Herndon’s points came in the second half.
Clallam Bay faces the Port Angeles C team on Monday in Port Angeles.
Crescent is off until Wednesday when it will plays at Neah Bay.

SEATAC — The Warriors used an offensive burst near the end of the first half to pull away from the Cowboys in Nisqually League play Friday night.
“It was actually not that awful for [most of the first half], but they went on a run of 10 points in the last about minute and a half,” Chimacum coach Trevor Huntingford said.
In the second half, Seattle Christian’s size and physical play became too much for the young Cowboys.
“They were a physically bruising team, literally,” Huntingford said, adding that many of his players’ arms were covered with red marks and bruises at halftime.
“The game got pretty rough. It was the most physical game we’ve seen this year, by far. We’re not used to playing that type of game.”
Seattle Christian was especially dominant on the offensive glass.
Chimacum’s defense caused the Warriors to miss the first shot on many occasions, but then they would get the rebounds and have three or four opportunities to score per possession.
Huntingford, in his first year as Chimacum’s head coach, was “pleased with the way we started out defensively.”
He was most worried about Seattle Christian’s Alayna Gleason, who stands 6-foot-2, before the game, and liked that his team held her to just eight points.
The Warriors, however, got 17 points from Madelyn Webber.
Audrey Thacker topped the Cowboys with six points.
Samantha Cerna and Bailey Castillo had four each, while Hailee Johnson and Kiersten Snyder both contributed two.
Chimacum (0-7, 1-10) plays at Cedar Park Christian on Tuesday.
