SPORTS: Forks football team takes on Elma and Rainier in playoff; Port Townsend sends four runners to state championships

ABERDEEN — The Forks football team will be spending Halloween night trying to get into the Class 1A preliminary playoffs.

It could get frightening as the Spartans battle Elma and Rainier in a Kansas Plan playoff tonight at Olympic Stadium starting at 6.

The three teams are tied for fourth place, the final playoff seed, in the Southwest Washington League, Evergreen Division.

The Spartans (3-4, 3-6) beat Elma (3-4, 4-5) 14-13 on Friday night to put themselves in the position for a shot at the playoffs.

“We’re real excited about being in the playoff,” first-year coach Mark Feasel said.

Rainier (3-4, 4-5) earned a spot in the playoff by belting Rochester 35-7 on Friday night.

Tonight’s winner advances to the preliminary state round Saturday.

The teams play a round-robin and if there is no clear winner, they keep going.

They will get the ball on 25 yards from the end zone and get four downs to either score a touchdown, kick a field goal or earn a first down. They keep going until they either run out of downs or score.

A coin flip will determine the what two teams will play first.

PT state runners

Port Townsend will send four runners instead of the three reported in Sunday’s editions to the Class 1A state cross country championships.

The Westside Classic 1A state allocation is the first 30 individual runners instead of the top 25 allowed in the 2A ranks.

That means that Peri Muellner qualified for state by capturing 27th place in 21 minutes, 33.5 seconds for the 3.1-mile course at American Lake Golf Course in Lakewood.

Muellner’s teammate, Brittany Grant, took 12th place while Port Townsend boys Xavier Frank and Addison Harper claimed 11th and 17th, respectively.

Port Angeles, Chimacum and Forks are sending two runners each to state while Sequim is sending one.

The state meet is scheduled for Saturday at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco for all classifications.
