Sports: Forks falls to Lynden Christian in state playoffs

YAKIMA — A day after winning at the overtime buzzer, the Forks High School boys basketball team lost almost the same way.

The Spartans claimed eighth place in the Class 2A state tournament at the Yakima SunDome on Saturday, falling 47-42 to Lynden Christian, which finished fifth.

Senior David Burr missed a possible game-tying 3-pointer with three seconds left in overtime and Lynden Christian sank two free throws in the final seconds to seal the win.

“It was a set play for me but I couldn’t get an open shot,” Burr said outside the team locker room after the game.

“We were hoping for fifth, but . . . “

Forks, which went 2-2 at state and finished the season 20-8 overall, made it to the trophy round with a last-second overtime win over Connell on Friday.

Junior David Hurn sank a 3-pointer from the left corner at the overtime buzzer off an assist from Jordan Justus to propel Forks to a trophy game for the first time since 1969, when the Spartans were a Class 1A team.

“I don’t usually get excited and I thought I was going to fall out of my chair,” Forks head coach Scott Justus said of Friday’s win.
