FORKS — For one game, the Forks volleyball team was almost untouchable Tuesday night.
The Spartans rode a hot start to a 25-7, 22-25, 25-19, 25-23 victory against the Rochester Warriors in SWL-Evergreen Division play.
Melissa Shaw served up 17 straight points in a game-one rout.
After a brief hiccup in game two, Forks came storming back in the final two games to move to 2-1 in Evergreen Division play and 3-1 overall.
“Overall, we played pretty good,” Forks coach Jennifer Neel said.
“We let off of them [in game two]. We tried to go soft on them, and then we came back and played back to our top level.”
Spartan setter Jillian Raben spread the ball around with 26 assists. Junior outside hitter Casey Williams pounded out 19 kills while teammate Sydney Christensen had seven kills and Erin Weeks five kills.
“[The Warriors] were a quiet team that didn’t quite have the talking and working together as much,” Neel said. “A lot of aces on our part tonight.
“We’re doing good [with the communication]. We sometimes let off a little bit, but we can get in the huddle, get back together and start it back up.”
Forks’ mettle will be tested when it travels to back-to-back state participant Montesano on Thursday for a league match.

POULSBO — The Redskins (0-3 overall) fell to the defending Olympic League champions in three games Thursday, 25-10, 25-11, 25-6.
Enani Rubio and Rio Golden had two kills apiece for the Redskins in the nonleague affair.
Ellie Forbes added four digs and one kill and Christine Unrue had two digs, one kill, one ace and four assists.
“Although North Kitsap is defending league champions, I think my girls did exceptionally well against them,” Port Townsend coach Nettie Witheridge said.
“They were playing together and giving it all they got, but most importantly they stayed positive and no one got down on themselves.”
Port Townsend next hosts Class 1B Crescent on Thursday in a nonleague matchup.
Port Angeles 3, Kingston 0
KINGSTON — The Roughriders improved to 4-0 in the nonleague match against Olympic League-rival Kingston on Tuesday.
Port Angeles won 25-18, 25-17, 25-11 with Kiah Jones leading the way with 17 kills, a block, six digs and two serving aces.
Setter Emily Drake had 23 assists to go with her five aces, seven digs and two ills while Autumn Ruddick earned five kills, Danielle Rutherford had seven digs and Madison Hinrichs had six digs.
The Riders next host North Kitsap in another nonleague match Thursday night.

SEQUIM — The Wolves had a closer match than expected because they were missing their top hitter, Haleigh Harrison, for the nonleague game Tuesday.
Sequim (3-1) won the barn-burner 29-27, 14-25, 25-20, 16-25, 16-14.
“Some kids had to step up with Haleigh gone,” coach Jennie Webber-Heilman said.
“That’s good for us because it makes us more balanced.
Kyla Martin led the Wolves in serving by going 10 for 10 and she had an ace with 16 digs, a block and five perfect passes.
Alexas Besand had eight kills, a block and eight perfect passes while Taylor Balkan dished out 25 assists with nine digs, 17 of 19 serving and three aces.
Hannah Hudson earned 25 digs in the match.

KINGSTON — The Buccaneers scored with five minutes left to win the battle of even teams in nonleague action Tuesday night.
“We made a defensive mistake and they scored on a 25-yard shot,” coach Scott Moseley said.
Kingston had nine shots on goal to the Roughriders’ eight. Port Angeles now is 3-1-2 on the year and next will host North Kitsap on Thursday.
Karina Bohman was named defensive player of the game while Kathryn Moseley was picked as transition player of the game and Brittany McBride was selected as offensive player of the game for the Riders.

FORKS — The winless Spartans had a tough time against Southwest Washington-Evergreen Division powerhouse Rochester on Tuesday.
Rochester led 7-0 at halftime and cruised to the win.
The Spartans, who play at Montesano on Thursday, now are 0-3 in league and 0-4 overall.

SILVERDALE — The Trojans buried the Wolves with three second-half goals to claim Tuesday afternoon’s nonleague affair.

POULSBO — Delanee Nilles scored two goals and Jessica Sprague dished out two assists to lead the Vikings past the Redskins in Tuesday night’s nonleague matchup.
Irina Lyons netted the Redskins’ lone goal on a penalty kick in the 60th minute. By that time, however, North Kitsap was already up 4-1.
Port Townsend (3-3-0 overall) has a week off before traveling to Port Angeles on Sept. 27.

PORT TOWNSEND — The Redskins beat the Roughriders for the first time in years in Olympic League action Tuesday.
“Port Townsend has a pretty good small core group of swimmers, and we couldn’t match up to them,” Port Angeles coach Rich Butler said.
“I told my girls last week they could do this if they worked cohesively as a team, and they sure did,” Port Townsend coach Anji Scalf said.
“We realize that our win was mostly due to Port Angeles not being able to dive — they certainly would have had the lead if it was elsewhere, but we like knowing that head-to-head, swim-for-swim we are at their level of competition. There are good things to come.”
Eighty-five points is half of what can be scored in a swimming meet with no diving, Scalf said.
Port Townsend’s Darby Flanagan pulled two upsets, in the 200-yard and 500 freestyle races, while Madison Braden won the 100 backstroke and Serena Vilage captured the 100 breaststroke.
“It is very gratifying to have such an eager and dedicated team . . . [we] did everything we discussed in practice to beat our goliath opponent,” Scalf said.
Tracie Macias was a double winner for the Riders, capturing the 50-yard freestyle and the 100 butterfly while Kelsey Macias took the 200 individual medley and Tarah Erickson won the 100 free.
The Port Angeles 400 free relay also won.
The Riders next host Klahowya in an Olympic League meet Thursday.
