CLALLAM BAY — Braden Decker and Mark Jacobson combine for 30 points to lead Forks over Clallam Bay in nonleague boys basketball action.
Decker, MVP in the SWL-Evergreen Division last year, scored 17 points while Jacobson added 13 in leading the Spartans to the 57-37 victory Wednesday night.
Leo Gonzales netted 10 points to give the Spartans three players in double figures while Kelly Gregory pumped in a game-high 18 points for the Bruins.
Forks remains perfect on the year and now is 3-0.
“We’re having tough competition right out of the gate,” Clallam Bay coach Kelly Gregory said about the 0-2 Bruins.
“They jumped on us quickly. It was hard for us to match up with their height.”
The 1A Spartans roared out to a 16-5 lead at the end of the first quarter but the 1B Bruins played close the rest of the way.
Forks had just a 41-32 advantage in the final three periods of play.
The Spartans led 29-15 at halftime and 43-27 going into the final period.
The two teams have a rematch at Forks on Monday night with the boys varsity game starting at 5:30 p.m.
The Forks JV girls will meet the Clallam Bay varsity at 7 p.m. in the doubleheader.
Forks-Neah Bay
The 1A Forks varsity boys and girls teams also are having doubleheader games against 1B Neah Bay next Wednesday at Forks and again Jan. 8 at Neah Bay.
Forks has had scheduling problems and quickly picked up games with Clallam Bay and Neah Bay to help fill out its schedule.
In Wednesday’s game, Colton Raben added seven points for the Spartans while Kevin Hess had six for the Bruins.
Forks had a strong defensive effort to go along with a solid offensive night.
“We were really well-balanced,” Forks coach Rick Gooding said.
Jacobson led on the boards with 10 rebounds while Decker added eight.
“Everyone got a rebound, which shows me we’re starting to block out,” Gooding said.
The Spartans started out strongly offensively but then slowed down later in the game.
“We started out pretty aggressive,” Gooding said.
“But we left a lot of points on the board. Hopefully, we will get a killer instinct and keep our foot on the gas.”
The Spartans have been struggling with shooting percentage this year.
“We shot a little better, 40 percent,” Gooding said.
“I’m not worried about our shooting. Our shooting touch will come.”
Gregory led the Bruins on the boards with five rebounds while Ryan Willis and Austin Ritter had four each.
Ritter also gave out four assists.
The Spartans next play tonight at Elma before hosting Clallam Bay on Monday.

JOYCE — The Loggers started their season by cruising to a home victory over the visiting Rangers on Tuesday evening.
“The boys played a good game for the first one of the season,” Crescent coach Darren Heaward said.
Derrick Findley led the way with 20 points for the Loggers.
Sage Fadness added 15 points, Travis Walker scored seven, Gene Peppard had 6, Josh Sowders finished with four and Beau Bamer contributed two points.
The Loggers next face Taholah on the road tonight.
Quilcene hosts Rainier Christian on Tuesday.
