Sports: Forks, 2 Chimacum teams advance to state tournament

UNIVERSITY PLACE — The Chimacum girls basketball team picked up third place in the Class 2A West Central District Tournament on Saturday and a berth to this week’s 2A State Championships in Yakima.

Caitlin Eldridge led the Cowboys with 14 points and six rebounds in the third-place game at Curtis High School.

Behind Eldridge for Chimacum were Jovi Monroe with 11 points, followed by Bethany Freidrich with six.

“We played a good game, besides the fact that our rebounding absolutely stunk in the first half,” Cowboys head coach Jim Eldridge said. “That was the only reason the game was so close.”

Chimacum will travel to the Yakima SunDome on Wednesday for the opening round of the state championship tournament.

The tourney draw is today.

In other district action, the Chimacum boys basketball team picked up third place in Class 2A West Central District play after defeating Orting 63-38 on Saturday at Curtis High School.

With their third-place finish, the Cowboys picked up a spot in the state championships, which is set to kick off on Wednesday.

The tournament draw for the 16-team event is this morning at 10.

Forks 43, Hockinson 41

CENTRALIA — The Spartans are headed to state thanks to a game-winning last-second shot by David Burr in the fourth-place game of the Class 2A Southwest District tournament on Friday.

“He got a great look and sank it,” Spartans head coach Scott Justus said. “It was a great finish.”

Dustin Daniels led the Spartans with 13 points, followed by Kevin Silcox with eight.

D.J. Huggins and Burr each chipped in seven points for the Spartans.

“We got into some foul trouble early, which hurt us a bit,” Justus said. “But our bench was great for us, and they did a great job of holding the fort.”

Silcox led down low for the Spartans with eight rebounds, followed by Burr with six.

Jordan Justus, who was held to just four points for Forks, had seven assists and four steals.

Forks will travel to the Yakima SunDome on Wednesday for the opening round of the Class 2A State Championships.

The tournament draw for the 16-team event is this morning at 10.
