PORT ANGELES — Week three of the 2009 football season wraps up the non-conference season for Sequim, Port Townsend and Chimacum all on the road while league openers await Port Angeles at home and Forks on the road.
North Olympic rivals Crescent and Neah Bay also meet up in a nonleague contest.
Capital at Port Angeles
PORT ANGELES — The Cougars might be the best 0-2 team in Class 3A after suffering a last-minute loss to O’Dea, ranked No. 6 in Class 3A in week 1, and a seven-point loss to rival Olympia, the ninth-ranked team in 4A, last weekend in the Spaghetti Bowl.
Port Angeles, meanwhile, has been shut down on offense in its two early season losses to archrival Sequim and North Mason.
No. 6 Sequim at No. 6 Cascade Christian
SUMNER — This contest sets up as a nice early season nonconference test for the Wolves.
Sequim, ranked sixth in Class 2A, visits last season’s 1A runner-up on Saturday night at Sunset Chev Stadium in Sumner.
Wolves quarterback Drew Rickerson hopes to continue his hot start to the season against the Cougars.
Rickerson has completed 26-of-34 passes for 406 yards and six touchdowns with no interceptions in the Wolves first two games.
Port Townsend at Orcas Island
EASTSOUND — Scheduled two years ago, this tilt between the Redskins and Vikings was on the chopping block after school district officials expressed no interest in funding nonleague travel.
Fundraising efforts by parents, boosters and community leaders, including a $500 donation by the Port Townsend Kiwanis, secured a $2,000 charter boat for Saturday’s trip to the San Juan Islands.
Redskins senior quarterback Eric Thomas settled down against Chelan and completed 19-of-29 pass attempts for 182 yards and two touchdowns last week after a rocky opener against Chelan.
Thomas is leading the Redskins in rushing yards per game (62.0) and passing (158.5).
Forks at Rochester
ROCHESTER — Forks (1-1) begins Southwest Washington League Evergreen Division play on the road against the winless Warriors (0-2).
Rochester has put up anemic numbers on offense so far in 41-0 losses to Castle Rock and 50-7 to 2A Woodland.
Chimacum at Klahowya
SILVERDALE — The Cowboys (1-1) hope to continue their recent resurgence against a Klahowya team that has been outscored 95-12 in its first two contests.
The Eagles (0-2) have a new coach in Lyle Prouse and have switched up their offense from the run-oriented double-wing attack that had been in place for a decade.
No. 5 Neah Bay at Crescent
JOYCE — These two league rivals meet at 1 p.m. Saturday in a nonleague matchup.
Crescent will be lead by running back Dylen Heaward who has 352 yards rushing and five touchdowns on the ground in the Loggers first two contests.
Neah Bay has been feasting on turnovers on defense, with junior quarterback/defensive back Drexler Doherty pulling down six interceptions in wins over Taholah and Lake Quinault.
