SPORTS: Elementary school-age designers sought for North Olympic Discovery Marathon Kids Medal contest

PORT ANGELES — Students in grade six and under are invited to submit designs and artwork for the medal awarded to an expected 500 participants in June’s North Olympic Discovery Kids Marathon.

This will mark the fifth year the Kids Marathon medal has been designed by an elementary school student.

The grand-prize winning designer will work with race director Victoria Jones and a medal design team “to refine, finalize and approve” the 2021 Kids Marathon medal design. The winner and those who take second through fifth place in the design contest also will receive free entry to the June 5 marathon and a gift basket with a special certificate, water bottle and other goodies.

Judges are looking for designs that highlight one or more of the following elements: running, fitness, kids, and what you might see along the Olympic Discovery Trail.

Designers need to keep their artwork within the square outline provided on the application, but designs can be of any shape and use of color is encouraged — artists should “keep it simple and colorful,” while understanding that tiny details will be hard to replicate on a medal.

Applications are available at https://tinyurl.com/PDN-KidsMedal.

Entries must be mailed or delivered by Feb. 5.

They can be mailed to NODM, PO Box 431, Port Angeles, WA 98362. Applications also can be dropped off at Angeles Electric, 524 E. First St. in Port Angeles or Dungeness Kids, 163 W. Washington St., in Sequim.

The 17th annual North Olympic Discovery Kids Marathon is set June 5 at Port Angeles City Pier.

This spring, kids will set running goals and use a mileage log to track their miles.

On race day, all kids are invited to run the final 1.2 miles of their marathon along the Port Angeles waterfront on the Olympic Discovery Trail and will end the run under the same finish line that adult marathoners will cross the following day.

Registration details for all marathon events can be found at www.nodm.com.
