JOYCE — Clallam Bay gave Crescent all it could handle in the first half, but the Loggers romped in the second half of a Northwest Football League game on Saturday.
Crescent (1-0 in league and overall) scored 24 unanswered points in the third quarter for a 46-22 victory.
The loss extend Clallam Bay’s current losing streak to 16 games. It’s the second-longest such streak in the state.
“Outscoring Clallam in the third quarter was big,” Crescent coach Tim Rooney said. “It was a hard-fought win and we are overall happy with the victory.”
The score was tied 8-all at the end of the first quarter.
The Loggers, however, began to separate themselves in the second quarter with Derrick Findley throwing a 40-yard touchdown pass to Joey Barnes to end the first half ahead 22-14.
“It was a hard-hitting game,” Clallam Bay coach Cal Ritter said. “We showed a lot of heart, but we have a few things to iron out.”
The Loggers came out in the second half blazing as Findley scored on a 27-yard keeper to add to the lead.Teammate Eric Larson had a 66-yard touchdown run, putting a damper on Clallam Bay’s hope for a win.
Luke Wonderly led the Bruins defense with 20 tackles and a sack, while freshman teammate Matt Mohr had 13 tackles and a sack of his own.
Crescent travels to play Neah Bay next week. Clallam Bay will battle it out with Evergreen Lutheran on the road.

ARLINGTON — The Quilcene Rangers (1-0) won their first varsity game since beating Chief Leschi in October 2007.
“We just overwhelmed them,” Rangers coach Alan Reimann said after the mercy-rule finish.
“The team was excited and confident going into the game, but now we have to flush it away and get ready for next week.”
The Rangers wasted no time putting points on the board against Highland Christian.
Quarterback Brandon Bancroft had five rushes for 49 yards, a touchdown pass and a fumble recovery returned for a touchdown.
Teammate Colby Schreier had two touchdown catches for 85 yards.
Schreier’s second touchdown catch was a 55-yard pass from freshman quarterback Jacob Pleines on the first play of the second half to end the game via the 45-point mercy rule.
“I really respect Highland Christian for only playing with eight guys, mostly being freshmen,” said Reimann.
The Rangers face off against the Evergreen Lutheran Eagles on Saturday at 1 p.m.

TACOMA — The youthful Redskins stayed with the Tarriers most of the night before finally giving way in their first Nisqually League game of the season Friday night.
“We played much, much better this week,” coach Tom Webster said.
“Kyle Kelly threw the ball well, and the kids just played better. We just need to get some turnovers.”
Fullback Mel Thorton scored Port Townsend’s lone touchdown on a 3-yard run in the fourth quarter.
Conakry Coggins was Port Townsend’s leading rusher with 47 yards on four carries. Quarterback Kelly completed 7-of-12 passes for 81 yards. He also had two interceptions.
Marko Herr led on defense with 12 tackles, four solo. Zac Olson added a sack.
Port Townsend (0-1, 0-2) plays a Nisqually League game at Vashon Island on Friday night.
“We’ll just keep strapping it up every Friday,” Webster said. “Friday nights is where it’s at.”

FEDERAL WAY — The Red Devils (1-0, 1-1) bounced back in fine form after their opening loss last weekend to Lummi.
Freshman quarterback Josiah Greene had two touchdown throws to Drexler Doherty and four runs for scores, including a 59-yarder, while Titus Pascua returned two interceptions for touchdowns and ran 30 yards for another.
In this scorefest, Neah Bay was ahead 16-6 after one quarter, 36-20 at halftime and 50-26 at the end of three.
As if that wasn’t enough, the Red Devils scored 20 more points in the fourth stanza.
Greene sprinted for 224 yards on 11 carries in the game, while Pascua ran for 153 yards on 17 carries.
Greene threw for another 92 yards for 316 total yards of offense. Doherty, meanwhile, caught seven passes for 65 yards.

SEQUIM — The Class 2A Wolves (1-1) hit a bump in the road against 1A state powerhouse Meridian (2-0) in nonleague action Saturday night.
After a turbulent week that saw its longtime head coach, Bob Ames, resign for one day before returning, Meridian responded with a dominant effort on the field.
The game remained close only in the first quarter as the Trojans — ranked No. 7 in 1A by The News Tribune of Tacoma — scored 15 unanswered points in the second period to turn a 13-8 lead to 28-8 at halftime.
Chris Salkey returned an interception 28 yards in the first quarter to put the Wolves on the board.
A two-point conversion run by Frank Catelli gave the Wolves eight points.
Sequim concluded its scoring in the fourth quarter on a 28-yard pass from Drew Rickerson to Michael Ballard.
Rickerson’s two-point conversion pass to Catelli ended the scoring for the Wolves.
Sequim next will host Klahowya (0-2) in its opening Olympic League game Friday night.
