NEAH BAY — The Crescent volleyball team captured the top spot in the North Olympic League by beating tough Neah Bay in a match that went five games Tuesday.
The Loggers (4-0, 10-1) defeated the Red Devils (2-3) in a barn-burner, 25-21, 25-19, 19-25, 18-25, 15-10.
“Winning ugly is better than losing pretty,” Crescent coach Alex Baker said.
“I’m not taking anything away from the Lady Red Devils, they played the best match I have seen them play all year.
“They played a spirited match and battled with us.”
“We are playing better every game,” Neah Bay coach Sharon Kanichy said.
On the other hand, the Loggers were making serving and mental mistakes, according to Baker.
Perfect in league
But in the end the Loggers remained undefeated in league and have only lost to 2A Klahowya varsity all year.
For Crescent, Catherine Youngman was 17 of 20 serving with eight aces. She also had a kill.
Bonnie Hazelett also had a good serving night by going 12 of 13 with two aces, and she was strong at the net with eight killsand seven tips for points.
Crescent libero Kelly Belford was 10 of 11 serving with an ace and in the back she had eight digs on defense and two hustle plays.
Sara Moore had the best serving night by making 18 of 19 with six aces. She added four kills and four tips in the front row.
Crescent setter Rachel Bowen was 5 of 5 serving and she gave out 23 assists with five tips and a kill.
For Neah Bay, Brandy Swan earned five kills and she had two aces while Rebecca Thompson had five kills and four aces.
Courtney Winck controlled the net for the Red Devils with four blocks and four kills.
Kaela Tyler added threekills, a block and an ace for Neah Bay while Crysandra Sones served two aces.
The Loggers next play at Clallam Bay on Thursday while the Red Devils have an alumni match Thursday, will play at the Crescent Tournament on Saturday and will play archrival Clallam Bay for second place in league this coming Tuesday.

FORKS — The powerful Bulldogs (10-1, 10-1) won the SWL-Evergreen Division match 25-22, 25-8, 25-19 on Tuesday.
The Spartans, at 6-5, 7-5, stay in the playoff hunt.
Casey Williams led Forks at the net with six kills while setter Jillian Raben dished out 16 assists.
The Spartans next play at Rainier on Thursday.

KINGSTON — The Redskins (0-7, 0-13) captured the second game from the fourth-place Buccaneers (4-2, 6-5) but couldn’t keep up in Olympic League action Tuesday night.
Kingston held on 25-12, 12-25, 25-20, 15-13.
“We played well, especially in the second game,” coach Nettie Hawkins said.
Codi Hallinan was named the player of the match for the Redskins as she had seven kills and four blocks.
“She did everything she could to stop the ball or put the ball down.
“Our defense was pretty good but our serving was what hurt us in the end.”
Christine Unrue led the defense in the backcourt with 10 assists and 10 digs while Ellie Forbes had a team-high 11 digs.
Abby McGuire earned five assists, five digs and four kills.
Girls Soccer
Port Angeles 2, Sequim 0
SEQUIM — The Roughriders earned a playoff berth with the Olympic League win against their archrival Tuesday night.
Port Angeles (3-1-2, 7-4-3) is on a roll with only one loss in the last seven games.
Brittany McBride scored both goals for the Riders and was named the overall player of the game.
She scored her first goal in the 48th minute on a Kathryn Moseley assist and scored the second at the 67th minute unassisted.
“Brittany had two awesome goals,” Port Angeles coach Scott Moseley said.
“Her second goal was a crushing knuckleball shot from 20 yards out that the Sequim goalie had no chance at.”
The Riders outshot the Wolves 19-2 but had problems finishing their shots in the first half.
“Any time Sequim and PA plays, it is very emotional,” Moseley said.
“We didn’t relax in the first half. But we were able to relax in the second half and ride on Brittany’s goals.”
Port Angeles will honor its eight seniors in its final regular season home game on senior night Thursday against Kingston.

FORKS — The Spartans fell behind 5-0 at halftime in the SWL-Evergreen Division game and never recovered to remain winless for the season.

PUYALLUP — The defending 1A state champion had an easy time in the Nisqually League game Saturday in a contest that wasn’t reported to the news media by either team for days.
Cascade Christian improved to 4-1, 5-2 while the Redskins fell to 0-5, 0-7.
Cascade quarterback Jaelin Goldsmith passed for 223 yards and five touchdowns.
