SPORTS: Crescent boys track team dominates four-way meet; other prep reports

JOYCE — Titus Pascua, Mike Zapien and Kellie Belford were triple winners at a four-way track and field meet at Crescent High School on Wednesday.

Class 1B host Crescent, Clallam Bay and Neah Bay all competed with the 2A Port Angeles JV team with the Loggers dominating the boys meet and the Roughriders blowing the field away in the girls competition.

The boys meet was between Crescent and Neah Bay, two of the fastest 1B schools in the state — with that speed showing up also in their football and basketball teams.

The Loggers won with 95.5 points to the Red Devils’ 65 while the Riders were back in third at 42.5 and the Bruins fourth in 35.

The Rider girls, meanwhile, amassed 132.5 points to easily out-pace runner-up Loggers with 61.5. The Red Devils were back in third at 26 and the Bruins fourth at 14.

Pascua, a Neah Bay senior, had an outstanding meet by winning the 100-meter sprint in 12.35 seconds, the 200 in 25.05 and the long jump with a leap of 19 feet, 5 inches.

Crescent’s Zapien, meanwhile, captured all three throwing events by heaving the shot put 41-11.5, throwing the discus 115-01 and tossing the javelin 138-02.

Crescent teammate Belford claimed the 100 in 14.89, the 300 hurdles in 55.65 and the 200 in 30.87.

Double winners included Matthew Waldrip of Crescent, Joshua Monette of Neah Bay and Courtney Winck of Neah Bay.

Waldrip took the 110 hurdles in 18.08 and the 300 hurdles in 46.72 while Monette claimed first in the 1,600-meter run in 5:26.43 and the 800 in 2:35.64.

Winck captured first in the 100 hurdles in 18.97 and the triple jump with a distance of 29-02.5.

The Crescent boys and girls teams combined for 13 titles, including all the relays except for one that was won by the Riders.

Neah Bay had nine championships as Port Angeles earned eight and Clallam Bay had two.
