TACOMA — Chimacum High School’s boys golf team is sending two to the Class 1A state championships next week.
Cowboy standout Eric Nelson, the Nisqually League MVP, and teammate Mason Moug will compete in the 1A state tournament Tuesday and Wednesday at Columbia Point Golf Club in Richland.
Nelson shot 73 at Eagle Pride Golf Course, the old Fort Lewis course, in the Nisqually League championships to win medalist honors Monday.
He earned the league MVP by averaging near par all-season long.
Nelson, Moug and Jacob Ruby qualified for the district tournament Tuesday on the same course when they finished above the cut in the league tourney the day before.
On Tuesday, Nelson and Moug shot 83 each to tie for 12th in the district tournament and earn state berths.
It was Nelson’s worst competitive round of the season but enabled him to join the field for next week’s state competition.
Moug shot 83 both on Monday and Tuesday, playing in periods of bright sunshine and equally hard rain around the Eagle Pride tree-lined fairways.
Ruby shot 97 on Monday to qualify for districts on Tuesday where he missed the state cut by shooting 100.
Missing the first-day cut were Chimacum teammates Kevin Miller, who shot 102, Jarrett Hansen, 106 and Nathan Browning, 121.
Tennis PA at district
TACOMA — The season came to a close for the Roughriders when they lost second-round matches in the West Central District Tournament at Sprinker Recreation Center on Thursday.
“The competition was particularly strong this year and I was happy with how our kids competed,” Port Angeles coach Brian Gundersen said.
“Fortunately, three of the five players who qualified [for districts] will be coming back next year, and this experience will certainly help them going into next year.”
Alexis Corn, the lone Port Angeles singles player, bowed out against Kelly Joiner of Capital, losing 6-3, 6-2.
The boys doubles team of AJ Konopaski and Connor Reid put up a good fight but lost in the end, 6-3, 6-4, to Ben Davidson and Steven Scott of Bonney Lake.
The girls doubles team of Sam Manwell and Grace Van Rossen, both seniors, won the first set but lost 3-6, 6-1, 6-0 to Annika Sumpter and Madison Schwartz of Camas.
“Sam and Grace have meant so much to our program through their actions on and off the courts, and they will be missed,” Gundersen said.
District softball games postponed
TACOMA — All West Central District tournament softball games scheduled for today have been postponed until Saturday.
All levels, Class 4A, 3A and 2A, won’t begin tournament play until Saturday at Sprinker Recreation Center.
Also, some Saturday game times have been pushed back to allow time for maintenance crews to get the fields ready.
Games that were set to start at 10 a.m. now will be played at 11 a.m.
Other time changes are noon moved to 12:45 p.m.; 2 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.; 4 p.m. to 4:15 p.m.; 6 p.m. stays at 6 p.m.; 8 p.m. moved to 7:45 p.m.
Because of a continued threat of rain and thunder showers through Saturday, games may be played under approved speed-up procedures.
If games are played on Saturday, the remaining scheduled will be played Monday. If no games are played Saturday, then the tourney will be played Monday and Tuesday at Sprinker.
