CHIMACUM — The Chimacum Cowboys ripped Klahowya 67-14 in a nonleague football game Thursday night.
The Cowboys (1-1) are off and running after losing a close 20-18 heartbreaker to a strong Kingston team on the road the week before.
“I will take a win whether it is by one point or a win like this, they all feel the same to me,” coach Shawn Meacham said. “They both feel good.
“We will need the momentum and energy from this for Cascade Christian next week.”
The Cowboys open the Nisqually League at Cascade in Puyallup on Sept. 18. Cascade captured second in state for the last two years.
“That will be a tough game,” Meacham said.
The Cowboys were close to a school record or may have a new mark with 67 points but no one at the game knew, Meacham said.
“This is the most points by a Chimacum team since at least the late 1960s.”
Mason Moug threw four touchdown passes, two to running back Daryn Settlemire and two to Derek Toepper.
Settlemire also had a rushing score and Devin Manix scored on a punt return.
The Cowboys also scored on a fumble recovery.
Volleyball Chimacum 3, Forks 2
CHIMACUM — The two North Olympic Peninsula teams took it to the limit in a Class 1A nonleague match Thursday night.
The Cowboys (2-0) prevailed at the end by the score of 20-25, 25-18, 26-24, 15-25, 15-11.
Teamwork and strong blocking by Krista Hathaway sparked the Cowboys, coach Sally Shaw said.
Hathaway and Dani Kaminski had five kills each while Olivia Baird and Megan Dukek led the Cowboys in serving.
Baird and Dukek had three aces each.
Forks (1-1), meanwhile, had strong play from Jillian Raben, who had 27 assists, and Casey Williams, who had 19 kills.
Whitney Fairbanks and Raven McCann had six kills each.
Chimacum next plays at Kingston on Saturday in a nonleague match while Forks will be at the Centralia Tournament on Saturday.
PA perfect in jamboree
SEQUIM — The Roughriders opened the season by winning all six sets at the Sequim Jamboree on Thursday night.
Port Angeles beat Klahowya 25-8, 25-12; Port Townsend 25-7, 25-12; and host Sequim 25-15, 25-16.
Against Sequim, Kiah Jones had seven kills while Danielle Rutherford had six and Taylyn Jeffers had a team high four blocks and five digs.
Setter Emily Drake dished out 13 assists.
Against the Redskins, Jones led with seven kills while Jeffers had six and Rutherford five.
Drake had 12 assists.
Against the Eagles, Jeffers was 19-of-20 serving with seven aces while Drake gave out 24 assists.
Jeffers had four kills and three blocks while JOnes and Chloe Johnston had six digs each.
The Riders next host North Mason in a nonleague match Tuesday night.
The Port Angeles JV beat Sequim and Port Townsend by 3-0 scores each, and nipped Klahowya 2-1.
Girls Soccer Klahowya 4, Port Townsend 0
SILVERDALE — The Eagles scored two goals each in the first and second periods to win the nonleague game Wednesday night.
“We put up a fine resistance but were ultimately vulnerable to the accuracy of the Klahowya long-range-shots,” coach Colin Foden said.
“There were many encouraging signs of the quality of our team, and the game provided a number of lessons to be learned for the upcoming season.”
Klahowya beat Port Townsend 5-1 in the JV game.
The Redskins next host Friday Harbor at Blue Heron Middle School in a nonleague game Saturday starting at 2 p.m.
Chimacum 5, Forks 0
CHIMACUM — The Cowboys breezed to their first win of the year in the nonleague match between Class 1A teams Thursday.
Emma King earned a hat trick while Tihune Somes and Natassja Savidge also scored goals.
Ina Waring-Enriquez had an assist.
Chimacum (1-1) led 2-0 at halftime and never looked back.
The Spartans (0-2) still are looking for their first goal as well as victory of the year.
The Cowboys play at Kingston on Saturday in a nonleague game.
Boys Tennis Port Angeles 7, Olympic 0
PORT ANGELES — One more day, one more shutout victory for the Roughriders.
For the second day in a row, Port Angeles (2-0) swept an Olympic League opponent.
“Our guys have been really focused the first couple of matches, and I hope they are able to keep it up,” coach Brian Gundersen said about the Thursday match.
Winning singles matches for the Riders were Micah Roos, Hayden McCartney and Connor Reid.
Roos won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1.
Doubles victories went to A.J. Konopaski/Derek Crain, Michael and Marcus Konopaski, Easton Napiontek/Troy Gallagher and Jordan Negus/Chase Walsh.
Gundersen singled out Napiontek and Gallagher as the players of the match.
“Easton and Troy haven’t played together for long, but they worked very well together Thursday,” Gundersen said.
The Riders next travel to Auburn-Riverside on Saturday for a four-team invitational. They travel to North Kitsap on Monday for a league match.
