SPORTS: Chimacum falls at 1A tri-district softball tournament; Forks all-league baseball

CHIMACUM — Lynden Christian ended Chimacum’s softball season with a 7-2 win at the 1A tri-district tournament.

Lynden Christian scored six runs in the top of the seventh inning to win the loser-out game at Chimacum High School on Wednesday.

“It was a disappointing loss, but the girls never gave up,” Chimacum coach Lauralee Kiesel said.

Mistakes cost the Cowboys as they had six errors in the game, most of them coming in the crucial seventh.

The Cowboys went ahead 1-0 in the fifth inning but Lynden Christian tied it in the top of the sixth.

Lynden Christian put the game out of reach with the six runs in the seventh.

Chimacum had seven hits in the game but couldn’t string them together.

“We couldn’t get enough consecutive hits,” Kiesel said.

Kyah McKinlay went a perfect 2 for 2 and had an RBI while Mallori Cossell smacked a double and went 2 for 4.

Cydney Nelson, Erin Bainbridge, Megan Dukek and Krista Hathaway all went 1 for 3 each.

Kiersten Snyder had an RBI for the Cowboys.

Nelson went the distance on the mound, scattering eight hits while walking none and striking out three.

She kept Lynden Christian from scoring through the first five innings.

Nelson also had four defensive outs from the pitcher position while Snyder had three defensive outs from shortstop.

The Cowboys earned a double play that went from Snyder at shortstop to Hathaway at first base, and then from Hathaway to home where Cossell made the tag for the second out.

Dukek had two defensive outs at third base.

Bridget Kruck carried the big bat for Lynden Christian, going 2 for 4 with a double and two RBI.

SWL all-league

FORKS — Two Forks players were named to the all-1A SWL-Evergreen Division teams, as voted on by the league’s coaches.

Spartan senior outfielder Mitchell Leppell was voted to the first team while sophomore pitcher Javier Contreras was selected to the second team.

Taking MVP honors was Montesano senior Layne Bruner while Montesano’s Mike Bruner was named coach of the year.

Layne Bruner, a pitcher, is committed to Washington State University.
