CHIMACUM — A two-run homer by Austin McConnell sparked Chimacum to a 4-1 nonleague baseball win over Sequim on Monday.
The Class 1A Cowboys (1-0) used four pitchers, all sophomores, who held the 2A Wolves to four hits.
“It was a pretty good game defensively for both teams,” Chimacum coach Loren Bishop said.
“We did not hit the ball as well as I would have liked, though.”
Bishop’s goal in the game was to use as many pitchers as he could to get ready for the Nisqually League opener, which is Wednesday at home against powerhouse Vashon Island.
“We can’t take anybody in the league lightly but we go at it like Vashon is the team to beat in league,” Bishop said.
Chimacum ace Landon Cray (1-0) started the game on the mound, followed by fellow sophomores Joe Modispacher, Quinn Eldridge and McConnell.
Cray gave up no hits in two innings while Modispacher allowed two hits in three innings, Eldridge gave up two hits and an unearned run in one inning and McConnell finished it with three up, three down in the final inning.
The four combined for six strikeouts, Cray leading the way with three and Eldridge earning two. Modispacher had the other.
Cray and Dillon Dukek had a double each for the Cowboys.
Mike Bereiter had an RBI for the Wolves in the sixth inning.
Matt Bereiter started the game on the mound for Sequim.

Softball PA loses first two
KENT — The Class 3A Roughriders opened the 2010 season with a couple of close losses to 4A opponents at the Kentwood Classic Tournament on Saturday.
The Riders lost 6-2 to Stadium in the first game and 2-1 to Kentlake in the second.
“This was a good beginning for us,” Port Angeles coach Buddy Bear said.
Lauren Curtis pitched five strong innings against the Stadium Tigers before the Tigers combined several key hits with a couple of walks to score five runs in the sixth inning to put the game away.
“I’m very proud of how Lauren pitched,” Bear said. “She was asked at the last minute to step in and take on a veteran Stadium team.”
In the second contest, Stacy Webb pitched seven strong innings for the Riders.
“We stranded six base-runners and made some mental mistakes, so we had our chances,” Bear said.
Kentlake scored the winning run in the seventh inning.
“We needed to face some good competition before we begin league play,” Bear said.
The Riders open Olympic League action Friday against the Olympic Trojans.

CHIMACUM — Sophomore Demiree Briones pitched a three-hit shutout in leading the Wolves over the Cowboys in the nonleague game Monday.
Sequim (1-1) scored five runs in the fourth and fifth innings to put this game away.
Briones (1-1) went the distance, striking out seven and walking none in seven innings.
Brittany Nelson went the distance for Chimacum, fanning two while giving up five runs and 11 hits.
Maddy Zbaraschuk went 3-for-4 at-bat for Sequim while teammates Cindy Miller and Briones were 2-for-4 each and Jazzey Bradbury went 2-for-3.
Zbaraschuk also scored two runs and had a double and RBI while Briones knocked three runners in and had a double.
Bradbury also had an RBI for the Wolves.
Chimacum’s Nelson, Samantha Benner and Kailey Castillo had one hit each.
The Wolves next host Forks in a nonleague game Friday.

Boys Golf Sequim wins own jamboree
SEQUIM — The Wolves held off six other teams to win its own jamboree at Cedars at Dungeness Golf Course on Monday.
Sequim’s five players shot 214, just edging out Jefferson County golf powers Port Townsend and Chimacum.
The Redskins were runners-up with 218 while the Cowboys had a score of 221, followed by Kingston 230, Olympic 236 and North Kitsap 241.
Port Angeles had only four players and did not have a score.
“Port Angeles played very well but they were one player short of scoring,” Sequim coach Vic Quinet said.
Chimacum’s Mason Moug won medalist honors with 1-under par 36 while Sequim’s Ryan O’Mera was right behind with even-par 37.
