TACOMA — The powerhouse Chimacum baseball team breezed into the postseason by destroying Charles Wright in its final regular season game Monday.
The Cowboys, finishing 11-1 in the Nisqually League and 14-2 overall, ripped Charles Wright 15-1 in five innings.
The regular season league champions now will play Cascade Christian at Charles Wright High School in Tacoma on Friday night for the Nisqually League championship. Huh?
“I know, it doesn’t make sense,” longtime Chimacum coach Loren Bishop said. “After already winning league, we have to prove that we are league champions.”
The game starts at 6 p.m.
Cascade Christian of Puyallup finished second in league and is a good team in its own right.
The Cowboys swept Cascade this year but by close scores, 3-2 and 4-0.
“They were good games,” Bishop said.
Friday’s winner goes to the tri-district tournament as the league’s No. 1 seed and the loser goes as the No. 2 seed.
“It would be a lot easier if we go to tri-district as No. 1,” Bishop said.
Tri-district play will start Saturday, May 15, in Bellingham.
It was all over early against Charles Wright as the Cowboys went up 5-0 in the first inning, 9-0 in the second and 14-0 in the third.
Austin McConnell went the distance, striking out five while giving up just the three hits and the one run while walking two.
Quinn Eldridge led at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two RBIs while McConnell helped his own cause, going 3-for-4 with an RBI.
Egan Cornachione was 2-for-2 with two RBIs.
Chimacum had 16 hits and no errors in the game.

SEQUIM — The Wolves tied it up in the bottom of the seventh inning but the Buccaneers scored once in the top of the eighth to win the Olympic League game Monday.
It was dry but very windy as Sequim (8-7, 9-10) went up 1-0 in the first and Kingston tied it 1-all in the third, then went ahead 2-1 in the fourth.
Weston Royall walked to open the seventh inning for the Wolves and went to second base on a passed ball.
Pinch hitter Mike Bereiter singled to score Royall and send the game into extra innings.
Matt Bereiter started on the mound and went 5 2/3 innings for the Wolves, fanning five while allowing just five hits and one earned run.
Alex Gillis (2-2) pitched the final 2 1/3 innings, striking out three and walking three while allowing one hit and the one run.
Isaac Yamamoto carried the big bat for the Wolves, going 2-for-4 with a triple and scoring a run in the first inning while Gillis was 1-for-3 with a walk.
Drew Rickerson went 1-for-4 with an RBI.
Sequim next plays at fellow Class 2A North Mason on Wednesday.

SEQUIM — The Wolves tuned up for their showdown with state powerhouse North Mason on Wednesday.
Sequim, 13-1 in the Olympic League and 16-2 overall, travel to Belfair on Wednesday to take on the perfect (13-0, 14-0) Bulldogs for first place in league.
Both teams are Class 2A, so Wednesday’s game is crucial to both of them.
The Wolves aren’t going to back down, coach Mel Hendrickson said.
They have a shot at the Bulldogs, Hendrickson added.
“We gave them the last game because of our errors,” he said.
Sequim had an easy time against the Buccaneers after giving up three runs in the first inning.
The Wolves scored two in the bottom of the first, then went ahead for good 4-3 in the second inning.
Sequim rested pitching ace Demiree Briones and instead went with Chelsea Winfield (3-0), who threw the seven innings, striking out 11 and allowing just four hits and three walks.
Lea Hopson continued to torment Olympic League pitching, going 4-for-4 with her 12th home run of the year. She had three RBIs in the game.
Winfield and Ryleigh Zbaraschuk went 2-for-3 each while Cindy Miller and Maddy Zbaraschuk both were 2-for-4 each.

Boys Soccer Port Townsend 4, Klahowya 0
PORT TOWNSEND — The Redskins rolled into a do-or-die playoff game Thursday with a dominating Olympic League win Monday.
Port Townsend (3-8-1, 6-8-1) will play Cascade Christian of the Nisqually League at home Thursday in a loser-out pigtail match for the second year in a row.
The winner advances to district competition.
The Redskins beat Cascade Christian last year in a shootout after a double overtime.
On Monday, the Redskins outshot the Eagles 22-2 and rolled to a 3-0 halftime lead.
Port Townsend had balanced scoring as Harrison Hodgson, Sam Selisch, Louis Gitelman and Sebastian Lyons had one goal each.
Each goal was unassisted.
Goalkeepers Ethan Berg and Kody Whipple combined for two saves for the Redskins.
Monday’s game was senior night for the eight seniors on the team.
“We wanted to get a win for our seniors,” Port Townsend coach Patrick Kane said.
