NWAC cancels men’s, women’s hoops tourneys
PORT ANGELES — The NWAC men’s and women’s basketball tournaments have been cancelled, Peninsula College vice dean of student services Rick Ross confirmed in an email Thursday.
Ross said the Peninsula men and women were returning from campus sites in Oregon. Neither team played a game in the event, which was originally suspended and then postponed after beginning at Everett Community College last week.
The tournaments were rescheduled to Clackamas Community College in the Portland suburb of Clackamas and Linn Benton Community College in Albany, Ore.
Wednesday night, the decision was made to hold the tournament with only essential personnel and without fans, but circumstances changed rapidly in the sports world overnight.
NWAC Executive Director Marco Azurdia said in an email that “Oregon community college presidents worked with both Clackamas Community College and Linn-Benton administrators” before deciding to cancel the tournament.
“We have made many efforts to continue the tournament, but in the interest of public health the tournament has been cancelled,” a statement posted on the NWAC website read.
“We want to acknowledge the hard work of our student-athletes, coaches, and volunteers throughout the season, and especially during the past week.”
The Peninsula women wrapped its season with an 18-7 record. The Pirate men finished with a 20-7 overall mark.
Meeting postponed
PORT ANGELES — A community meeting to discuss the potential construction of a bicycle pump track in Port Angeles has been postponed.
The meeting was scheduled tonight from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Vern Burton Community Center.
No makeup date for the meeting has been announced.
Tour weekend canceled
SEQUIM — The first weekend of the 23rd annual Tour de Dungeness cycling event set to begin Saturday has been cancelled.
Event organizer Mike Van Doren said the event was having trouble attracting volunteers due to fears associated with the potential spread of coronavirus.
Van Doren said next Saturday’s tour date is still up in the air.
