Sequim sends diver, two relay teams to state
SEQUIM — The Sequim boys’ team qualified two relay teams and a diver for the state 2A swim and diving championships that begin Friday at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.
Qualifying at the West Central District III 1A/2A meet was diver Mathew Craig, with the second-highest point total in the state (behind only Port Angeles’ Andrew Methner). Craig tallied 360.0 points at district behind Methner’s 360.6.
Last year, Craig came in eighth at state.
Also going to state is the Wolves 200-yard freestyle relay team of Jax Thaxton, Kaleb Needoba, Alex Berikoff and Deven Biehler, with Jesse Bobst as an alternate. This team qualified with a time of 1:40.73, 19th best in the state.
The Wolves’ 400-yard freestyle relay team also qualified, placing fifth at districts with a time of 3:47.24, a new record for the team. This team consists of Berikoff, Thaxton, Needoba and Murray Bingham, with Zen Graham as an alternate. This time is also 19th best in the state.
The state swim meet begins with preliminaries on Friday, with finals on Saturday.
Gymnasts to state
AUBURN — Port Angeles and Sequim sent six gymnastics competitors to the West Central District III meet at Auburn Mountainview High School, with five of the girls moving on to the state gymnastics meet in invidiual events.
Port Angeles’ Cassandra Middlestead finished sixth on the bars with a score of 71, eigth on the floor with a score of 8.675 and nineth on the beam with an 8.3. She qualified for state in all these events, plus the vault. She was seventh overall at district with a combined score of 31.475.
Sequim’s Lesae Pfeffer qualified for state in the vault, finishing 10th ith a 7.725 and in the beam with a 7.9.
Port Angeles’ Cassidy Tamburro qualified for state in the bars with a 6.175, while teammate Julienne Jacobs qualified for floor with a 7.6 and Maizie Tucker qualified for the vault with a 7.4.
The state gymnastics meet will begin Thursday at the Tacoma Dome Exhibition Hall.
Tour de Dungeness
SEQUIM — Registration is now open for the 21st annual Tour de Dungeness races that will be held March 10 and 17 in and around Sequim.
One big change this year is that the start/finish line and parking area have been moved. The new line and parking area is at Dungeness Community Church at Sequim Dungeness Way and Eberle Lane.
The 12-mile course will include Lotzgesell, Cays, East Anderson, Sequim Dungeness Way, Woodcock and Kitchen-Dick roads. Race organizers expect 400 to 450 riders each day from all around the Pacific Northwest.
Drivers are warned that there could be some minor traffic delays on these roads on the days of the races.

Playoff hoops update
PORT ANGELES — Neah Bays girls and boys teams will play a doubleheader at Port Angeles High School tonight in the Tri-District 1B Basketball tournament.
The Neah Bay girls (18-2 overall) will play Lummi (11-10) at 5:30 p.m., while the boys (12-8) will play Tacoma Baptist (20-3) at 7 p.m.
The Red Devils both received byes by winning the North Olympic 1B League and had to wait nearly a week to learn who they would play.
The Port Townsend teams, both winners of the Olympic League 1A division, also recently learned who they will be playing in the West Central District 1A Tournament. The Redhawk boys (11-8) will be Bellevue Christian (16-4) at Bremerton High School at 7:45 p.m. today, while the Port Townsend girls (9-10) will play Cascade Christian (13-8) at 7:45 p.m. at Bremerton High School on Wednesday.
Also, Sequim learned this weekend who it will play in the West Central District 2A Tournament. The Wolves (10-11) will play league rival Olympic (17-5) at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Wilson High School. That is a loser-out game. The winner goes to the semifinals of the consolation bracket.
