Sequim hoops team wins state title
SPOKANE — The Sequim fifth-grade select boys basketball team won the AAU middle school state championship for its division in Spokane on March 15-17.
The Sequim team won all of its games, beating Newport 49-15, Cedarcrest 45-14, Snohomish 58-49 and Woodinville 48-41 in overtime.
The team also has won tournaments in Portland, Ore., and Port Angeles this season.
Winning the state tournament qualified the boys for the national AAU tournament. They will be playing in Orlando, Fla.
The team is asking for support from the community to raise money for airfare, lodging, food and transportation. A Gofundme page has been set up at www.gofundme.com/y52z3-10000 or go to Gofundme.com and search for “Sequim Youth Basketball.”

Swim Club results
PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Swim Club competed in two events this past month, placing a number of swimmers at both.
At the March Madness meet held March 2-3 in Bremerton, Kenzie Johnson, 17, finished first in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2 minutes, 14.15 seconds, breaking the Port Angeles Swim Club record and qualifying for the Northwest Age Group Regional Championship. Johnson also finished second in the 100 backstroke, second in the 100 breaststroke, second in the 50 freestyle and sixth in the 100 freestyle.
Mia Coffman, 15, was first in the 1,000 freestyle, qualifying for the Senior State Championships; second in the 400 individual medley, third in the 200 butterfly, third in the 200 backstroke, fourth in the 200 IM and fifth in the 100 butterfly.
Blake Nahory, 12, was first in the 500 freestyle, third in the 200 IM and 200 freestyle and fifth in the 100 freestyle.
Colby Ellefson, 12, was second in the 500 freestyle and fourth in the 100 freestyle, while Amayah Nelson, 10, was second in the 100 freestyle and third in the 50 freestyle.
Lily Newberg, 8, was second in the 25 butterfly, the 50 freestyle, the 25 backstroke and the 25 breaststroke.
Audrey Tesreau, 10, was third in the 200 freestyle and Jackson Tesreau was sixth in the 400 IM.
At the February Divisional in Tacoma on Feb. 22-24, Amelia Hughes was first in the 400 IM and the 100 butterfly, qualifying for the Northwest Age Group regionals in both events. She was also second in the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle and third in the 50 breaststroke.
Johnson was first in the 200 IM, second in the 200 backstroke and seventh in the 100 freestyle.
Josh Gavin, 15, was first in the 400 IM, the 200 butterfly, the 100 breaststroke and the 50 freestyle. He finished second in the 50 butterfly and the 50 breaststroke.
Meanwhile, Nora Bowechop, 8, was first in the 50 freestyle and second in the 25 butterfly. Yau Fu, 12, finished second in the 100 and 200 butterfly, third in the 200 freestyle and fifth in the 100 freestyle.
Danika Asgeirsson, 11, was third in the 200 IM and eighth in the 100 butterfly.
