Roughrider athletes of the week

PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles High School’s Annika Pederson and Shannon Cosgrove have been named Roughrider Student-Athletes of the Week for Sept. 15-20.

Pederson, a senior captain on the girls cross country team, leads by example.

“Over the last two years she has consistently been in the top five [of Riders runners] while maintaining a high grade-point average,” Port Angeles coach Pat Durr said. “The team has great respect for Annika’s advice, both running and about academics.”

Cosgrove earned a starting spot on the Port Angeles girls soccer varsity team as a freshman and demonstrated why against Chimacum, scoring just the third goal-by-header in Port Angeles coach Scott Moseley’s six years of coaching the Riders.

“After a perfect cross, Shannon was able to get her head on the ball, in spite of the goalie and a defender in her face,” Moseley said. “She has developed a strong shot and will continue to score this season. Overall, she is one of the hardest workers on the team and has quickly fit in with the older girls.”

Last BMX race day

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles BMX track will hold its final race of the season on Sunday.

Allen had the honor of meeting the highest ranking female Taekwon-do practitioner in the U.S., Grandmaster Rene Sereff, who passed on her best regards to Bodystrong Taekwon-do student in Sequim.

State Fair medalist

PUYALLUP — Natalie Blankenship, age 12, of Port Angeles, and her horse BH Bodacious (Bo) recently earned a Grand Championship and Gold Medal win at the Washington State Fair.

Blakenship’s success came in the Bareback Equitation competition’s intermediate division.

This division had 115 participants, including six representing Clallam County.

Blankenship is a member of the Pony Express 4-H Club and is a student at Stevens Middle School.

Storm King reigns

PORT ANGELES — The Storm King Lightning U11 boys soccer team edged NSC Nitro 2-1 last Saturday in a matchup of the Puget Sound League’s last unbeaten teams.

The defense led the way for Storm King against the top goal-scoring team in the league with goalkeeper Tyler Lawson and company holding the Nitro to just one goal, which came in the first two minutes of the game.

The Lightning answered right away with Israel Gonzalez scoring off of an assist from Kristian Mingoy.

After both teams missed on several goal scoring opportunities, Gonzalez returned the favor to Mingoy with under 10 minutes to play.

The Lightning travel to Redmond for a 3:30 p.m. game Saturday.
