Rangers VB splits pair of games
QUILCENE — The Quilcene Rangers split their first two matches of the year against Mary M. Knight, losing on the road 3-1 Monday after beating the Owls 3-0 last week in Quilcene.
“We did not have all of our starters for these first two games, a lot of our younger players had the opportunity to step up and experience varsity-level playing, while the starters we did have on the team showed their leadership and perseverance,” said coach Joni Crowell.
In Thursday’s match, Savannah McBride served 100 percent and had eight kills, while Shelby Love had five aces and five kills.
Stormie Elkins had five aces, 12 assists and four kills, while Sierra Graunke had five aces and Anna Munn four aces. Jayden Talley added three aces and a pair of kills.
As far as Monday’s match, Crowell said, “I think our nerves got to us a bit yesterday, it was the first away game for the majority of the team at a varsity level and Mary M. Knight had some impressive coverage and quick reactions.
“Regardless, it was a great experience for us all, and we are happy to see improvements from everyone every day, as well as having the opportunity to have a season,” Crowell said.
Peninsula Soccer League results
PORT ANGELES — Windermere, Forks FC, High Energy Metals and Salazar Painting got wins on the opening day of Peninsula Soccer League play Sunday at Wally Sigmar Field at Peninsula College.
The Windermere club shut out Pantry & Latch 4-0, Forks FC got by Strait Slice 5-3, HEM stopped the Bandidos 3-1, and it was Salazar Painting lighting up the net in a 6-2 romp over Pura Vidd.
Winderemere 4, Pantry & Latch 0 — Goals: Ben Sneider (2), Alex Lopez and Josiah Long for Windermere.
Forks FC 5, Strait Slice 3 — Goals: Oscar Gonzalez (3), Aurelio Garcia, Silvina Ramos for Forks, and Zach Grey (2) and Kalani Dix for Strait Slice. Assists: Aaron Lee and Quincy Burne for Strait Slice.
High Energy Metals 3, Bandidos 1 — Goals: Rick Smith, Chris Saari, Kanyon Anderson for HEM and Isaac Liljeholm for Bandidos. Assists: Jake Hughes, Jack Waknitz and Rick Smith for HEM.
Salazar Painting 6, Pura Vidd 2 — Goals: Rafael Moreno (3), Juan Carlos, Pablo Salazar and Sabrina Wilk for Salazar Painting; Edgar Aceves, Roberto Gonzalez for Pura Vidd. Assists: Rafael Moreno and Raul Medina.
Future Riders sweep three games
PORT ANGELES — Future Riders youth football and cheer had their home opener Saturday, sweeping the East Jefferson Rivals at all levels.
The A squad was dominant in their 53-13 victory. The offense was led by Carson Waddell and his five touchdowns. Jack Root had a great defensive performance.
The B squad offense had a tremendous showing, winning 34-0. Running back Cannon Free led the team with three rushing touchdowns, while quarterback Landon Eastman and Aiden Soiseth each had rushing touchdowns. On defense, Grant Lancaster and Noah Kiser shined with tenacious pressure on the Rivals’ offensive backfield.
The C squad had an outstanding day with a winning score, 54-0. On the defensive line, Nate Hirst Jr. had three quarterback sacks and caused four fumbles in the backfield. On offense, Hunter Stone ran for 532 yards and six touchdowns.
