SPORTS BRIEFS: Port Angeles Student-Athletes of the Week . . . Alison Maxwell honored for running exploits . . . Seahawks event Friday at Peninsula College

PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles seniors Kate Haworth and Astrid Schick have been honored as Roughrider Student-Athletes of the Week for Oct. 6-11.

Haworth is a big reason for the success of the Port Angeles girls soccer team this season.

As a defender, her presence has led to four shutouts and 7 wins already—2 more shutout and two more wins with three games left in the regular season.

A team captain, she has made the transition from midfielder to defender and has grown in her skills there.

“She is also offensive minded and many times helps generate our attack from her right-back position,” said Port Angeles coach Scott Moseley.

Academically, Haworth is an Honors /AP student who challenges herself in the classroom.

She also plays in the orchestra and is a studentgovernment leader.

“She is the whole deal—athlete, student, musician, leader,” Moseley said.

Schick is a captain and two-year letter winner for the Riders’ girls cross country team.

“At the Bellevue Invitational Astrid Schick showed true leadership,” Port Angeles coach Pat Durr said.

In this race, Durr said, only two athletes run at a time with each duo responsible for their own warmup and cool down.

In one race, only one freshman girl was running, so Schick, on her own volition, did an extra warmup and cool down with this athlete.

“This is one of many great leadership examples that Astrid exhibits each race day and each practice day,” Durr said.

“She keeps the girls motivated while doing planks, sit-ups, and push-ups, and glute [exercises], which is not always an easy task.

“In addition, she is a leader at school and in the classroom.”

Maxwell honored

MIDDLEBURY, VT. — Middlebury College cross country runner Alison Maxwell has been selected as the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Women’s Division III National Athlete of the Week.

Maxwell, a senior at Middlebury, is a 2011 Port Angeles High School graduate.

The honor marks the first weekly national accolade from the organization in Middlebury history.

It came just a day after Maxwell was picked as the New England Small College Athletic Conference Women’s Runner of the Week.

Maxwell turned in an 11th-place finish out of 262, also the top Division III finish, at the Open New England Championship with a 5K time of 18:00.2.

She edged MIT’s Maryann Gong by eight hundredths of a second for the top Division III time.

Her showing helped the No. 4 nationally-ranked Panthers place first among Division III programs and second overall, marking the best finish by the team in program history.
