Port Angeles High School hosting concussion forum Thursday, March 26
PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles High School will host a concussion forum Thursday, March 26.
Dr. Stanley A. Herring, a board-certified physical medicine and rehabilitation physician, a leading concussion specialist, a University of Washington professor, and a team physician to the Seattle Seahawks and Seattle Mariners, will speak at the forum at the Port Angeles High School Performing Arts Center.
This event begins at 7 p.m. and is free and open to all school district staff, coaches, parents and students, plus area sports teams participants and community members.
Herring currently serves as medical director of sports, spine and orthopedic health for University of Washington Medicine, and he is a clinical professor in the departments of rehabilitation medicine, orthopaedics and sports medicine, and neurological surgery at the University of Washington.
He is co-medical director of the Sports Concussion Program, a partnership of University of Washington Medicine, Harborview Medical Center and Seattle Children’s Hospital.
Herring is a founding member of the Physiatric Association of Sports, Spine and Occupational Rehabilitation and the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine.
He is a member of the NFL Head, Neck and Spine Committee, and the chair of the Medical Advisory Committee for USA Football, as well as the medical advisory board for Pop Warner Football.
Girls hoops title game
PORT ANGELES — The possible future of Port Angeles girls basketball was on display at Port Angeles Parks and Recreation’s Olympic Lodge Spring Hoopfest earlier this month, and it looks bright.
The Port Angeles Storm, a seventh-grade team, defeated the Olympic Avalanche, made up of players from Port Angeles and Sequim, 45-28 in the championship game of the tournament’s eighth-grade division.
“I was very proud of the girls for going 3-1 while only losing to a very strong PA Storm team in the final,” Avalanche coach Joe Marvelle said.
“We have so much admiration for what [Storm coaches] Ed Brady and Seth Wilhelm have done with that group this year.
“It’s easy to see why they’ve won three tournaments already this year.”
Mikkiah Brady led the Storm with 12 points, while Rian Peters of Forks had 10 points and eight rebounds.
The Storm were bolstered in the championship game by its two Forks players: Rian Peters had 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Jayden Olson had six points and seven rebounds.
Mikkiah Brady added nine points and three rebounds.
“The girls are family, they genuinely like each other, and want the best for each other which translates to strong teamwork on and off the court,” Brady said.
“The support and friendships they have with their teammates coupled with a very focused desire to put in the hard work of developing their individual basketball skills, has been a major factor in the team’s success this year.”
The Storm advanced to the Spring Hoopfest final by finally defeating nemesis Bainbridge 30-28 on a buzzer-beater by
Jai-Lynn Taylor.
The Storm rallied from 12 points down with less than four minutes to beat Bainbridge.
Spring Hoopfest was also the first time the Storm defeated frequent opponent Olympic Avalanche.
Madison Cook led the Avalanche in the championship game with 18 points, while Kalli Wiker grabbed 10 rebounds and Myra Walker pulled down five.
“You look at what Josh Noel is doing with the PA Thunder [sixth grade] and what Fred and Jennifer Petty are doing with the PA Threat [fifth grade], and it’s really, really exciting,” Marvelle said.
“The majority of these kids will be Port Angeles Roughriders together someday, and I would say the future for the PAHS program is incredibly bright.”
Sequim baseball clinic
SEQUIM — Sequim varsity baseball team will host a youth baseball clinic Saturday at the high school baseball fields.
The clinic is for boys and girls in grades 3 through 8, and will run from 9 a.m. to noon. Registration is from 8:30 a.m. to 9 a.m.
The cost is $20 per player, and includes a Wolves baseball cap and a snack.
Women’s hoops league
PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Parks and Recreation women’s basketball league begins Sunday.
Teams or individual players can register at the Parks and Recreation office.

April Fools hoops
PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles Parks and Recreation is hosting the April Fools Extravaganza basketball tournament next Saturday and Sunday, March 28-29.
There will be divisions for boys and girls teams from fifth grade through high school.
The entry fee is $250. Each team is guaranteed four games.

Roller derby bout
SEQUIM — Port Scandalous Roller Derby is kicking off its fifth season with a game at the Boys & Girls Club, 400 W. Fir St., next Saturday, March 28.
Doors open at 5:30 p.m., and the skaters hit the track at
6 p.m.
Port Scandalous welcomes Victoria’s Eves of Destruction to the match-up.

Tickets at the door are $12.
Military and seniors receive a discount with ID.
