PA duathlete competes for U.S. in Denmark

PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles’ Dave Lasorsa recently finished 15th in the age 60 to 64 age group at the Sprint Duathlon World Championship in Odense, Denmark earlier this month.

The race was part of the International Triathlon Union Multisport World Championships held on the island of Fyn.

Lasorsa was part of Team USA, competing against more than 25 other nations.

He finished the race, consisting of a 5.5-kilometer (3.41 miles) run, a 19.9-kilometer (12.36-mile) bike ride and a final 2.5-kilometer run (1.55-miles) in 1 hour, 13:57.

Lasorsa noted that “the Europeans are tough racers, especially on the bike. However, in this style of racing, bicyclists can draft behind each other, saving energy.”

Using that strategy, Lasorsa joined up with other members of the U.S. squad and formed a fast pack, passing riders of other countries.

The final run was an all-out affair and wove through cobblestone streets of the old city, passing by the birthplace of fairy tale-author Hans Christian Andersen.

Lasorsa said he had “One of the funnest races of my life, especially given that the U.S. athletes worked so well together as a team.”

He plans to compete in next year’s world championships in Pontevedra, Spain, having already made Team USA at Nationals in April.
