PC soccer women win opener 3-0
MOUNT VERNON — Playing in their first match in roughly 18 months, the Peninsula women’s soccer team started off their long-delayed season with a 3-0 shutout over Skagit Valley.
It was the first game the Pirates had played since they lost in the Northwest Athletic Conference championship in November 2019.
“I told the women after the game, ‘I feel so good.’ This feels great,” said coach Kanyon Anderson.
Anderson said he was concerned if the women would be in game shape, but he was happy with their fitness level and possession.
“We held the majority of possession. A shutout against a good team, you can’t complain much,” Anderson said.
Alysia Alvarado scored a goal with an assist from Makenna Wilson. Wilson also scored a goal with an assist from Alvarado.
Also scoring was former Port Angeles Roughrider Krysten McGuffey. Her goal was assisted by Cecilia Jenkins.
Anderson said goalkeeper Musuai Isaia also made a great save on a penalty kick to preserve the shutout.
The Pirates women (1-0) and men both play their first home games Monday at Wally Sigmar Field. The women start at 2 p.m. while the men, who will be playing their first game since winning the NWAC championship in 2019, begin at 4 p.m.
Frosty Moss Relay sign-ups being taken
PORT ANGELES — There is still time to get signed up for the Frosty Moss or Mini Moss Relays scheduled from the Sol Duc Valley to Blyn for May 15.
The 80-mile run takes place on the Olympic Discovery and Olympic Adventure Trails from the Sol Duc River along Lake Crescent and the Strait of Juan de Fuca and Dungeness Valley. The Mini Moss 30-mile run goes from Ediz Hook in Port Angeles to Blyn.
Teams of two to 5 runners can sign up for the Frosty Moss, which has 15 legs of three to 11 miles, while teams of two to four runners can sign up for the Mini Moss, which has eight legs of three to five miles.
Participants can win awards for best team costumes and there will also be awards for favorite exchange zones.
There will also be a race after-party at 7 Cedars Resort.

Cougars get prized high-scoring transfer
PULLMAN — Former South Alabama guard Michael Flowers, the top available scorer in college basketball’s transfer portal, has committed to play at Washington State next season, he announced Saturday.
“I chose Washington State because I wanted to play in a Power 5 conference and I felt they were the best fit,” Flowers told ESPN prior to making his announcement on social media. “The coaching staff showed a great interest in me and my goals. I like the way coach Kyle Smith allows his point guards to make plays and helps put players in position to be effective.”
The 6-foot-1, 22 year-old Flowers ranked fourth in Division I in overall scoring this season with 588 points in 28 games, averaging 21 points, 4.6 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.6 steals, while shooting 39 percent from 3.
“They are getting a player who has a chip on his shoulder and will do whatever it takes to lead a team to the NCAA tournament,” Flowers said.
Flowers said he picked Washington State from a list of schools that included Arkansas, USC, Miami, Texas A&M, Florida, Colorado and Marquette.
Flowers started his career at Western Michigan and transferred after three seasons to South Alabama, where he played his senior season and will graduate this summer. He will take advantage of the extra year of eligibility the NCAA granted all winter sports athletes and play a fifth season as a grad transfer at Washington State.
