SPORTS BRIEFS: Parks and Rec begins winter hoops tourneys; All-Olympic XC team named

PORT ANGELES — A total of 16 teams participated in the Port Angeles Parks and Recreation Tipoff Tournament held in area gyms this past weekend.

In the girls’ eighth-grade division, Northwest Thunderhoops won, beating Peninsula Threat in the championship game 38-24.

Other teams in the eighth-grade division were Stanwood Spartans, third; 3D Burnaby U14 (British Columbia), fourth; Port Angeles Shamps, fifth; Forks Spartans, sixth; Sequim Wolves, seventh; Port Angeles Apex, eighth.

The Kitsap Storm won the girls’ sixth-grade division, beating Junior Threat in the championship game 19-5. Third place were the Runnin’ Rebels of Portland, Ore. and fourth place was Port Angeles Fire and Ice.

In the boys’ fifth-grade division, Northwest Thunder of Tacoma won, beating the Gig Harbor Tides Select 49-39. Port Angeles Green came in third and Port Angeles White came in fourth.

All Olympic XC

PORT ANGELES — All-league cross country selections were picked for the Olympic League, with Port Angeles, Sequim and Port Townsend getting six harriers on the boys and girls’ teams.

Making the team for the girls were Lauren Larson, Madelyn Dougherty and Ella Holland, all of Port Angeles. This trio help the Port Angeles girls finish ninth in the state as a team.

Making the boys’ team were Nathan Cantrell and Gabe Petrick of Port Townsend. Murray Bingham of Sequim also made the team.

Selections were based on the top 10 finishes at the Olympic League Cross Country championships held on Oct. 19. Larson and Cantrell both came in second at that race. Larson went on to finish 10th at the state 2A meet.

Also making the all-league team were:

Madison Zosa, North Kitsap; Rachel Newhard, Klahowya; Holly Rouse, Kingston; Claire Larson, Kingston; Savannah Knutson, North Mason; Isabella Porter, North Mason.

For the boys, also making the team were:

Lucas Becker, Klahowya; Max Metters, North Kitsap; Dorian Issa, Kingston; Joshua Combs, Olympic; Alex Oathout, Klahowya; Jaeden Ellis, Klahowyna and David Blalock, North Kitsap.
