SPORTS BRIEFS: PA Swim Club swimmers break records

FEDERAL WAY — Two Port Angeles swimmers broke pool records and three out of six Port Angeles Swim Club swimmers plaed in the top 16 at the Pacific Northwest Swim Championships in Federal Way on Dec. 9-11.

Felicia Che, 14, placed 16th in the 200-yard butterfly and her time of two minutes, 17.83 seconds broke the Port Angeles pool record.

Twelve-year-old Josh Gavin’s time of 2:32.26 in the 200 backstroke also broke the Port Angeles pool record. Gavin placed 12th in the 100 freestyle with a time of 58.77 and 12th in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:10.14.

Nadia Cole, 14, also placed 11th in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:08.33.

Forks wrestling wins invite

SEDRO-WOOLLEY — Forks wrestlers won the Spud Walley Invitational this weekend, beating out mostly bigger schools as 13 out of 14 Spartan grapplers placed.

“To enter 14 wrestlers in the tournament and then have 12 place is an impressive showing in anyone’s book. Hopefully, this has helped the wrestlers to understand their potential for this year,” said coach Bob Wheeler.

“I know that they have been doing well, but the esciting part is that I also knwo there is tremendous room for improvement. If they make some improvements, they are going to surprise a lot of people,” Wheeler said.

Forks finished first out of 12 teams at the Saturday meet with 208.5 points. Blaine was second with 197, Ferndale fourth with 15 and Tumwater fifth with 147. Forks, a 1A school, beat out 10 2A and 3A schools at the meet.

Kenny Gale at 182 pounds and Jack Dahlgren at 195 won their weight divisions. Eden Cizneros at 195 and Josue Lucas at 106 pounds each finished second.

Other Forks finishes include:

Brett Moody, 170 pounds, third; Ariel Morales, 120, fourth; Tony Muro, 120, fourth; Colby Demorest, 152, fourth; Gavin Palmer, 160, fourth; Thomas Jackson, 285, fourth; Nathan Flores, 220, fifth; Saul Avila, 132, fifth.

The girls and junior varsity also made a trip to Centralia. Brynn Peterson earned a fifth place.

Sequim to host all-girls wrestling meet

SEQUIM — Sequim High School is proud to host the first “All Olympic League Girls Wrestling Dual” on Thursday.

JV matches will start at 6 p.m., followed by the varsity match at 7 p.m.

All the Olympic League schools will be sending their female wrestlers to Sequim and regional teams will be created to give girls the experience of a varsity-style dual match. This will become an annual event that will rotate schools in the future.
