SPORTS BRIEFS: OPRA a gold, two silvers at American Lake; Crescent playoff game canceled

Eighteen Olympic Peninsula Rowing Association members competed in the American Lake Classic in Lakewood last week.

Hosted by Commencement Bay Rowing Club, the 5K head race started at the far east end of the lake, ran along the lake’s north shore, then swept around Silcox Island to the finish in front of the Commencement Bay boathouse. Over 20 clubs from throughout the Northwest competed at this regatta.

Noteworthy finishes were silver medalists: The novice 4x+ boat with Lica Kennedy, Ella Ventura, Harrison Fulton, Jack Feingold and coxswain Shannon Callahan and the women’s Jr. 1x with Veronica Kennedy. Calum Swinford in the men’s 1x was a gold medalist.

Olympic Peninsula Rowers faced small crews from Idaho and Canada several weeks ago and last weekend they went up against programs of similar sizes in western Washington as well as a few juggernauts from the Seattle area.

The juniors performed well proving to be a formidable opponent against some of the newer and smaller teams that OPRA had scrimmaged against in the past. They were also within striking distance from the larger, well established teams.
