Future Riders A-Squad wins title in thriller

FORKS — The Port Angeles Future Riders A-Squad rallied from an early 13-0 deficit for a nailbiting 26-25 win over Forks in the North Olympic Youth Football League Championship game at Spartan Stadium.

Early touchdowns by Forks’ Alex Pursley and Noah Foster put Port Angeles in a tough spot before some second quarter defensive adjustments slowed the Spartans’ attack.

A touchdown run by Future Riders’ Jude Wallace cut the lead to 13-6 at halftime.

Carson Northcutt scored quickly in the second half to boost Forks to a 19-6 advantage.

Port Angeles’ rally was keyed by some crucial defensive stops.

Oliver Martinez scored twice for the Future Riders as the lead swung in Port Angeles’ favor 20-19.

A fumble recovery on a special teams play led to a Wallace touchdown with less than 3 minutes to play to put Port Angeles up 26-19.

Forks wouldn’t quit, marching down the field and scoring on a Pursley to Foster touchdown pass on fourth and 3 with 26 seconds left.

The Spartans went for two and the win but Pursley was stopped on a quarterback keeper just shy of the goal line by Cooper Nees.

It was the first A-Squad championship for the Future Riders since 2014.
