Family fun run scheduled for this Saturday
PORT ANGELES — Healthy Families of Clallam County’s second annual Run for Safe Families 5-10K run/walk is set for Saturday at City Pier in Port Angeles.
Registration is available at tinyurl.com/PDN-HealthyRun or at the pier beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday.
Cost for the race, which will occur along the Waterfront Trail, is $35 for adults and $10 for children younger than 18.
The run/walk will begin at 10 a.m., while a children’s puppet show that focuses on making good choices and healthy relationships will follow at 11 a.m.
The event is held in recognition of October’s status as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
All proceeds support Healthy Families of Clallam County, which provides support to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.
Rider of the Week
PORT ANGELES — Sophomore Taylar Clark has been selected as the Port Angeles High School Roughrider Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of Sept. 20-25.
Clark is new to Port Angeles this year but has already contributed in big ways for the girls soccer team, including a two-goal performance in the Riders’ 5-1 win over rival Sequim.
With the score 2-1 in Port Angeles’ favor, Clark was going for a goal when she was fouled in the penalty box. She stepped up and put the ball in the goal.
Ten minutes later, she scored on a flick header off a 35-yard pass that Clark jumped to meet and redirected past Sequim’s goalkeeper.
Fit to be tied
SEQUIM — The Storm King Lightning Boys U11 soccer team’s perfect record suffered its first blemish of the season last Saturday in a 3-3 tie with Seattle United West.
The Lightning took the early lead and controlled the first half as Ethan Knight scored off of a pass from Cristian Gonzalez.
Storm King then fell behind twice in the second half. Defender Brandon Wagner provided the first answer with a blast off of a free kick.
Kristian Mingoy then tied the match once more with five minutes left in the game off of a nice feed from Israel Gonzalez.
Despite the tie, the Lighting are still in first place in the North Puget Sound League standings.
The Lightning will play at noon Saturday at the Albert Haller Fields in Sequim.
Avalanche win
POULSBO — The Olympic Avalanche sixth-grade select girls basketball team recently picked up wins against seventh- and eighth-grade teams from Kingston and Bainbridge Island.
“The size disparity was pretty stark but we dismantled both of them,” coach Joe Marvelle said.
The Avalanche dropped Kingston 45-18 behind 16 points and three rebounds from Millie Long and 11 points from Maddy Cooke.
The team then dropped the Bainbridge Roots 45-26.
Long again led the team in scoring with 13, with Camille Stensgard dropping in 10 points.
Kalli Wiker led the team on the boards with nine rebounds.
Crabfest results
PORT ANGELES — The Peninsula College women’s basketball team held a 5K fun run during the Port Angeles Crabfest celebration last weekend.
Proceeds raised support student-athletes at Peninsula College.
“Despite one of the rainiest runs we have had, there was an excellent turnout,” Peninsula women’s basketball coach Alison Crumb said, adding that approximatly 75 runners participated.
Dan Fish was the first man across the line, finishing with a time of 18 minutes, 29 seconds.
Rebecca Gooding was the first female finisher in 22:09.
Crumb said the Peninsula mascot, Pirate Pete, entertained at the event which was attended by all the Pirate women’s basketball players.
“Peninsula College would like to thank everyone who participated and made the event what it was,” Crumb said.
“There is truly so much support in this community for our student-athletes and we are very thankful to be able to have the 5K Crabfest fun run.
“Special thanks to Scott Nagel from the Crab Festival, who donated the prizes, and everyone who was involved.”
Surfers compete
WESTPORT — North Olympic Peninsula surfers competed in events at the 13th annual Clean Water Classic surf contest.
The event, organized and put on by volunteers from the Pacific Northwest chapters of Surfrider Foundation, is a major fundraising event for local chapters of Surfrider Foundation from southern Oregon all the way to British Columbia, attracting hundreds of spectators and more than 100 contestants.
Port Angeles’ Jonathan Grubbs won the High Score Shortboard contest and LaPush’s Greg Urata was second in the Master Shortboard category.
