SPORTS BRIEFS: Crescent’s Westfall wins GNAC hammer throw championship

ELLENSBURG — Crescent High School graduate Raine Westfall, now a freshman at Western Washington University, won the women’s hammer throw at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference track and field championships held this weekend.

Westfall won with a distance of 170 feet, 1 inch, winning the championship by more than 11 feet. It was a personal best by more than six feet.

Westfall finished first four times in the hammer throw this season at the CWU Wildcat Invitational, the Doris Heritage Track Festival, the PLU Open and the Ed Boitano Invitational. She finished second in three other meets and third twice.

Westfall didn’t get the chance to throw the hammer at Crescent High School as it is not a sport usually featured in high school track. She finished 10th in the state in the shot put and 13th in the discus. She also played football for the Loggers.

Western Washington competes in the NCAA Division II level against schools such as Simon Fraser, Alaska-Anchorage, Central Washington, Western Oregon, Saint Martin’s, Northwest Nazarene and MSU-Billings.

At the same meet, Seren Dances, a Port Townsend High School graduate who won state championships in the 110-meter hurdles, the 300 hurdles and the long jump for the Redhawks, came in third in the men’s long jump with a leap of 23-2¾ and fourth in the triple jump with a distance of 44-5¼. The WWU men’s track team won the GNAC championship.
