Chimacum to honor former coach Clarke

CHIMACUM — Former Chimacum High School basketball coach at teacher Mike Clarke will be honored at halftime of the Chimacum boys varsity game against rival Port Townsend on Monday.

Chimacum’s Big Blue Boosters will present a defibrillator for the school’s gym as well as a plaque that honors Clarke, who died June 12, 2012.

Clarke coached and taught at Chimacum from 1964 to 1992.

He retired and returned to coaching on a few occasions, before retiring for good in 1997 after a four-year stint with the girls basketball team.

The Big Blue Boosters are inviting former players and students of Clarke to attend.

The Chimacum-Port Townsend boys game starts at 5:15 p.m. The girls tip off at 7 p.m.

Madison scores 23

ANCHORAGE — Port Angeles High School graduate Jessica Madison scored a career-high last week and helped the University of Alaska-Anchorage women’s basketball team move up to second in USA Today’s Division II poll.

Alaska-Anchorage is 21-1 after its 97-83 win over Northwest Nazarene on Saturday, which featured a career-best 23 points by Madison, including 5 of 9 shooting on 3-pointers.

Madison, a junior guard, also had four rebounds and two steals.

Alaska-Anchorage’s only loss of the season was to Northwest Nazarene in late December.

Madison is the Seawolves’ second-leading scorer.

In Alaska-Anchorage’s all-time career stats, Madison has moved up to No. 3 in free-throw percentage at 81.6 percent, and is within two 3-pointers of fifth place (123).

Bingham honored

JOYCE — Crescent athletic director Dave Bingham was named the North Olympic athletic director of the year.

Bingham received a plaque along with the honor.
