Bench press competition set for Forks
FORKS — The Forks Athletic and Aquatic Center will host a Bench Press Competition at 3 p.m. Saturday.
The entry fee is $10.
There are two divisions, men’s and women’s, plus several weight classes.
For men, the weight classes are up to 140 pounds, 140 to 170, 171 to 210 and 211 and up.
The women’s classes run up to 110 pounds, from 111 to 140, and 141 and up.
The Forks Athletic and Aquatic Center is located at 91 Maple Ave.
Riders honored
PORT ANGELES — Seniors Hunter Hathaway and Matt Robbins have been selected as Port Angeles High School’s Roughrider Studen-Athletes of the Week.
Hathaway was selected for his performance for the boys basketball team in two contests against larger schools during a holiday tournament.
“Hunter showed the toughness, integrity and work ethic that makes him our senior captain,” Roughriders coach Kasey Ulin said.
Hathaway averaged 20 points and 13 rebounds in the two games.
“Hunter is a great leader for our team, as he keeps his focus on school, works a part-time job and plays at a high level on the court,” Ulin said.
Robbins wrestled his way to a victory in the 195-pound weight class as the Riders won the 14th annual Graham Morin Tournament at Squalicum High School.
“Matt literally smashed the competition in winning two of three matches by pin, including as dominant of a win as one could imagine in the semifinals,” Port Angeles coach Erik Gonzalez said.
“He then followed that up with a 9-0 shutout in the finals that wasn’t even that close. Matt is certainly making a statement to start the season.”
Swim team races
PORT ORCHARD —Members of the Port Angeles Swim Club competed recently at a challenge meet in Port Orchard.
Nadia Cole, age 12, won six events at the meet.
Cole claimed the 50-, 100- and 200-yard breaststroke events, along with the 100 backstroke and the 100 and 200 individual medley
She was third in the 50 back and fourth in the 100 freestyle.
Jaine Macias, 15, also won six events, taking first in the 50, 100, 200 and 500 free races, the 400 individual medley and the 200 breast.
Felicia Che, 12, was a dual-event winner in the 50-and-200-yard butterfly, and was second in the 200 breaststroke.
Kenzie Johnson, 13, finished first in the 200 butterfly, second in the 200 breast and third in the 50 and 200 free and the 100 breast.
Sierra Hunter, 14, was second in the 400 individual medley and the 200 back, third in the 200 individual medley and fourth in the 100 and 200 back.
Mackenzie DuBois, 9, earned second in the 500 free, third in the 200 free and fourth in the 100 free, 50 back and 100 breast.
Bella Money, 12, had a third-place finish in the 400 individual medley and was fourth in the 100 back.
Other Port Angeles Swim Club members competing at the event included Alex Che, Sage Hunter, Makena Merideth, Emilee Reid and Kylie Rentas.
Mariners events
VICTORIA — The Seattle Mariners Caravan, an offseason fan engagement tour that brings together Mariners players, broadcasters and the Mariner Moose with fans, visits Victoria on Wednesday.
Pitchers James Paxton and Charlie Furbush are set to appear along with announcer Dave Sims, former Mariners pitcher and Victoria native Steve Sinclair, and the Moose at the Ivy Ballroom at the Fairmont Empress hotel from 6:30 p.m. to 7:45 p.m.
If a mid-week visit to Victoria isn’t an option, the team also is hosting Mariners FanFest at Safeco Field in Seattle from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 24-25.
Tickets for the event are $10 for those older than 14. Those 14 and younger will be granted free admission.
Attendees can get autographs from current players like Cruz, Furbush and Paxton, plus outfielder Austin Jackson, starting pitcher Taijuan Walker and relievers Tom Wilhelmsen and Fernando Rodney.
Jay Buhner and Dan Wilson are set to appear that Sunday, with former Mariners catcher Dave Valle visiting for the Saturday session.
Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon will be on hand as well as touted prospects like Alex Jackson and D.J. Peterson.
Activities for kids include a chance to run the bases, hit from home plate, tour the Mariners’ clubhouse, pitch in the bullpen and play catch in the outfield.
Those weighing between 45 and 225 pounds can take a zipline ride across the outfield.
Attendees also can visit the stadium’s roof control room and learn about the mechanics behind Safeco’s retractable roof.
