Hopson at home

LUBBOCK, Texas — Former Sequim softball standout Lea Hopson, now a senior at Texas Tech, will make a visit to the northwest in her final season with the Red Raiders.

Texas Tech will make a spring break trip to the northwest to face nationally-ranked Washington in a two-game series on Wednesday, March 18, before facing Seattle University in a single game on March 19.

“Everything we do here at Texas Tech has a purpose,” first-year Red Raiders coach Adrian Gregory said. “

“This year we chose to travel to the great northwest to play Washington as well as Seattle.

“Both Cara Custer and Lea reside from the northwest and haven’t had many opportunities to play in front of their friends and family.

“We wanted to change that for them this year. Both programs will be a contest for us and who wouldn’t want to play one of the best teams in the country in the Huskies.”

Hopson won the Class 2A state title with the Wolves in 2011 before playing at the College of Southern Idaho.

She started all 54 games last season for the Red Raiders (35-19), batting .257, leading the team in walks with 23 and hitting seven home runs and driving in 29 runs.

Lightning on top

SEATTLE — The Storm King Lightning U11 boys soccer team improved to 7-0-1 on the season after a 3-1 triumph against Seattle United South last Saturday.

The Lightning are alone atop the North Puget Sound League standings.

Sweeper Brandon Wagner led the defense, limiting the Seattle side’s scoring chances.

Offensively, Israel Gonzalez led the Lightning with a hat trick with two of his goals coming unassisted and the other coming off of a rebound from a blast by Harrison Bell that deflected right to Gonzalez.

The Lightning travel to Bellevue Saturday to take on the Lake Hills Legacy at 1:30 p.m.
