PORT ANGELES — Ben Basden of Port Angeles and Sequim’s James Grubb were named to the Washington State Baseball Coaches’ Association Class 2A All-State team.
Grubb, an All-Peninsula team selection by coaches and the Peninsula Daily News, hit .432 for Sequim this season with 33 RBIs and a team-high 19 stolen bases. The All-Olympic League first team outfielder also went 2-1 with a 4.20 ERA on the mound for the Wolves.
Basden hit .319 for the state-bound Roughriders, with 10 RBIs, 11 runs and seven stolen bases.
He was a first-team All-Olympic League 2A Division pick at second base.
Lefties fall to Yakima
YAKIMA — The Lefties tried to rally from a 10-0 deficit against Yakima Valley, but in the end, the hole was too deep in a 12-7 loss.
The Pippins scored five runs in the second inning and four in the third Saturday to take a commanding 10-run lead. After that, Lefties pitchers Branden Maassen and Garrett Smith clamped down on the Pippins’ hitters, giving up just one hit and no earned runs while striking out six over the last 4 2/3 innings.
Meanwhile, the Lefties kept chipping away at the giant lead, scoring two in the fourth, two in the fifth, one in the sixth and two in the eighth.
Michael Ciancio hit a home run for the Lefties, his fifth of the year, and three RBIs. Aki Buckson had two hits and scored two runs. Benny Kaleiwahea had a hit and two stolen bases.
Three errors hurt the Lefties as only six of the Pippins’ runs were earned.
One oddity in the game is there was wildness by pitchers from both teams. Pitchers for both teams combined for 15 walks, three hit batsmen and four wild pitches.
The Lefties (16-31 overall, 6-14 second half), played Yakima Valley Sunday after press deadline. They play at Yakima at 6:35 p.m. today.

Wilder loses wild game
VANCOUVER — Wilder Senior got down big against Champions Baseball, rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh, but lost after a wild eighth inning 10-8 at the Clackamas and Clark Invitational.
Wilder fell behind in Saturday’s game 5-0, then scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth and three in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game.
In the eighth, Champions had a five-run inning to take a seemingly commanding 10-5 lead, but Wilder rallied again with three runs in the bottom of the inning to make the game close.
Kole Milyard had two hits with two runs scored and an RBI. Matt Hendry was 1 for 4 with two RBI and Carson Jackson was 1 for 3 with a double and a run scored. Colton McGuffey was 1 for 4 with a run scored and an RBI.
Reece Blatner and Joel Wood didn’t have any hits, but they each walked three times.
Curan Bradley started the game, pitching five innings, giving up three earned runs while striking out three and walking four.
