SPORTS BRIEFS: Archery raffle to benefit Caylen Phegley; state parks free day planned

PORT ANGELES — A compound bow raffle to raise funds for medical expenses for Olympic Peninsula fishing and hunting guide Caylen Phegley is underway.

Phegley suffered a broken back and jaw near Sekiu earlier this month while riding a motorcycle on a bear hunting trip when he was struck by a vehicle during an apparent hit-and-run incident.

The prize is a new 2019 Mathews Vertix compound bow with draw weight of 65 to 75 pounds and draw lengths of 26 to 30.5 inches. It includes a Spot Hogg Fast Eddie double pin sight, dove tail mount, Mathews quiver, a Quality Archery Designs rest and a lifetime warranty.

Raffle tickets are $10 and available through Sept. 4.

Tickets are available at E-Z Pawn East, 2416 E. U.S. Highway 101 in Port Angeles or by phone with a debit or credit card at 360-452-7296.

Free day planned

In recognition of the National Park System’s 104th birthday, the state Parks and Recreation Commission is offering free entrance to state parks Tuesday, Aug. 25.

Day-use visitors will not need a Discover Pass to visit state parks by vehicle.

The Discover Pass is still required on state Department of Fish and Wildlife and Department of Natural Resources lands.

The remaining 2020 State Parks free days are:

  • Sept. 13: Girls Scouts Love State Parks Day
  • Sept. 26: National Public Lands Day
  • Oct. 10: World Mental Health Day
  • Nov. 11: Veterans Day
  • Nov. 27: Autumn Day
