PORT ANGELES — Ron Snipe, a retired teacher from Port Angeles, earned six gold medals at the State Games of America in Grand Rapids, Mich., on Aug. 5-6.
Snipe won the 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, 200 breaststroke and 200 backstroke in the long course (50 meter pool) and 100 backstroke and 200 breaststroke in the short course (25 yard pool).
Snipe has now earned 20 national titles since 2009 in the various State Games of America swimming events. The State Games of America are held every two years with the next one in Lynchburg, Va., in 2019.
Oyster race
QUILCENE — The fifth annual Quilcene Oyster Races will be held Sunday, featuring a half marathon, 5K and 10K courses through rural back roads.
“Basically our whole town comes out to support the runners and coordinated the event,” said event chairman Tom Brotherton. “We’ve organized into sixteen sub-committees, so everyone has an opportunity to help out and make this year a success.” This year, the races were moved up one week to be part of the Quilcene Fair.
The event is hosted by Quilcene Brinnon Dollars for Scholars, which raises funds for scholarships at the local school and Count Me In For Quilcene, a non-profit organization providing support for community projects.
The Half-Marathon and 10K races are sanctioned is officially approved race course sanction by USA Track and Field Association. Last year runners came from Washington, California, Illinois, North Carolina and South Carolina.
The race begins and ends at Linger Longer Outdoor Performance Theater, located on the grounds of Worthington Park in Quilcene. Hood Canal Oysters and craft beers from the Highway 101 Brewery will be served at completion. Runners receive a complimentary local beer and a serving of oysters.
Entrance fees cover the costs of running the event. Sponsor support is necessary to generate scholarships and it’s not too late to become a sponsor and help further the education of local students.
