SPORTS BRIEF: OPRA rowers rack up medals at Row for a Cure

VANCOUVER — Summer camp paid off for Olympic Peninsula Junior Rowers at the Row for a Cure Regatta in Vancouver at the end of July.

Thirteen OPRA rowers medaled in every event they entered, winning a total of 22 medals.

OPRA had a strong showing in the single scull events with Maggie Van Dyken earning the silver in the Women’s 1x with Veronica Kennedy close behind to capture the bronze.

Nathan Mishler won a gold in the Men’s 1x, several boat lengths ahead of his competition.

The men’s quad with Nathan Mishler, Zach Gavin, Cyras Mills and Daniel Weaver finished over 30 seconds ahead of the field to take first.

OPRA’s Women’s 2x with Ella Ventura and Lica Kennedy raced against older and more experienced rowers to capture a bronze medal.

OPRA’s Mixed 8+ Rowers also finished strongly to earn a bronze medal with Maggie Van Dyken, Jake McGovern, Zach Gavin, Cyras Mills, Lica Kennedy, Vince Pavlak, Lisa Martin, Ella Ventura and coxswain Veronica Kennedy in the boat.

A silver medal was earned in the mixed 2x with Veronica Kennedy and Calum Swinford.

OPRA was also well represented in the master rower category, with Sean Halberg winning the gold in the men’s master 1x. He will be competing at the Master World Rowing Championships in Bled, Slovenia, later this summer.
