BREMERTON — The Bremerton Knights sneaked by Port Angeles 1-0 in a nonleague girls soccer game Wednesday night.
The Knights scored in the 32nd minute of the first half but the Roughriders (1-1) didn’t allow any more goals despite strong pressure.
Bremerton had 18 shots on goal to the Riders’ five but couldn’t get a second ball in the net thanks to 11 saves by goalkeeper Kearsten Cox.
Cox was named defensive player of the game.
“She came up with some big, import saves for us and this was her first varsity start in goal,” Port Angeles coach Scott Moseley said.
Kathryn Moseley was named offensive player of the game while Lauren Corn was picked as the transition player of the game.
Sequim 7, Chimacum 0
CHIMACUM — The Wolves had an easy time against an undermanned Chimacum team in a nonleague matchup Tuesday.
“We had only 11 eligible players for the game, and six of them have never played high school soccer before,” Chimacum coach Stan Berdinner said.
“We were up against it.”
That said, Berdinner was happy with the performance of his inexperienced Class 1A players against 2A Sequim.
“I was pleased with the effort of the girls,” he said.
The Cowboys (0-1) next host Forks tonight.
Details of the Sequim goals were not available.
The Wolves (1-1) opened the season with a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to Ocosta on Monday at home.
MaKayla Bentz and Quinn O’Neil scored goals for Sequim while Paige Johnson and Kristen Phifer had assists.
Boys Tennis Port Angeles 7, Klahowya 0
SILVERDALE — The Roughriders opened the season on a high note with the easy win Wednesday.
“We only lost two members off of last year’s varsity and I thought our experience showed today,” coach Brian Gundersen said.
Sweeping singles play were Micah Roos, Hayden McCartney and Connor Reid.
Doubles winners for the Riders were the teams of A.J. Konopaski/Derek Crain, Michael and Marcus Konopaski, Easton Napiontek/Troy Gallagher and Jordan Negus/Chase Walsh.
Gundersen singled out A.J. Konopaski and Crain as the players of the match.
“A.J. and Derek played really well for a first match,” Gundersen said. “They communicated and covered the court as well as any team I can remember.”
A.J. Konopaski and Crain beat Jerry Landrum/Forrest Brockett 6-3, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles.
The Riders next host Olympic today.
