SPORTS: Braithwaite leaps to 2A state long jump title; Crescent boys have outstanding 1B meet

TACOMA — Port Angeles’ Cameron Braithwaite concludes his high school career as a state champion.

In his third trip to state, Braithwaite earned the 2A long jump title with a 22-foot 5-inch jump.

Crescent, meanwhile, had a stellar meet, challenging for a state title in the boys meet while picking up a few individual titles of its own.

In 2A action, Braithwaite’s mark was almost two inches further than runner-up Christian Nuckolls of Ephrata.

Braithwaite also competed in the triple jump and javelin throw during the 2A/3A/4A state track and field meet at Mount Tahoma Stadium.

He made the finals in both, placing fourth in the triple jump and fifth in the javelin.

Elsewhere for the Roughriders, breaking a school record wasn’t enough for Tarah Erickson to claim a state title of her own.

Erickson’s vault of 11 feet and six inches exceeded the Port Angeles school record she set just last week at the West Central District championship by three inches.

But Squalicum teammates Tori Franzen and Kirsten Webber both had 11-09 vaults to claim the top two spots.

Erickson placed third, a full six inches above the fourth place finisher.

Katelyn Noard joined the list of Roughriders who reached the finals, throwing the javelin 90 feet and 9 inches.

Jayson Brockelsby was the standout performer for Sequim.

The junior tied for third in the high jump with Prosser’s Wade French with a jump of six feet and four inches.

Sehome’s Riley Fraser out-jumped them by two inches to claim the 2A high jump crown and Lakewood’s Justin Peterson placed second.

Brockelsby also competed in the 4×100-meter relay with teammates Dylan Chatters, Emanuel Herrera and Judah Breitbach.

The Wolves finished eighth in one of the state meet’s most competitive events, which was won by Ephrata.

1B state track

CHENEY — Mike Zapien, Matthew Waldrip and Joel Williams did what they could to lead Crescent to the 1B state boys title at Roos Field on the campus of Eastern Washington University.

They nearly pulled it off.

Zapien won a state title in the discus with a throw that measured 126-06.

He also took second in the shot put at 46-02 and tied for third with a 151-10 javelin throw.

Waldrip earned a state title in the 300-meter hurdles and Williams was second.

In the 110-meter hurdles, Williams took third and Waldrip finished fourth.

Both competed in the 4×100-meter relay for Crescent, teaming with Eric Larson and Beau Bammer to finish second in state.

The Loggers also got good performances from Donovan Christie and Derek Findley.

Christie placed second in the high jump with a 6-01 mark and Findley’s 40-0 score in the triple jump garned him a third-place finish.

For the Crescent girls, Devanie Christie finished fifth in the javelin with a 96-0 throw.

The Loggers’ 4×100 girls relay team also placed fifth.

Neah Bay and Clallam Bay also had good showings at the 1B state championship meet.

Neah Bay’s best finish was by the boys 4×100 relay team, which took third.

The relay team featured Elisha Winck, Harold Tyler, Joey Monje and Titus Pascua.

Pascua also added fifth place finishes in the 100-meter dash and the 200-meter dash.

The Red Devils got additional fifth place showings from Courtney Winck in the long jump and Harold Tyler in the Javelin.

For Clallam Bay, Ryan Willis placed third in the boys high jump and Melissa Willis got fifth in the girls high jump.

Jesse Wonderly was fourth place in the 400-meter dash for Clallam Bay.
