CENTRALIA — It took two overtimes for Kalama to subdue Forks in the first round of the double-elimination Class 1A Southwest District boys basketball tournament Friday night.
It was a back-and-forth game most of the night until the Chinooks took over in the second overtime, outscoring the Spartans 11-1 to win 60-50.
“It was a crazy game,” Kalama coach Jody Stemkoski told The Daily News of Longview. “We didn’t attack their zone well and they god a lead. We mead a little run at them, and got back into it in the fourth quarter.”
Forks freshman guard Colton Raben drilled a 3-pointer at the buzzer in regulation to send the game to its first overtime.
The Chinooks took the lead in the fourth at 42-39 with 13 seconds left. But Raben’s long-distance basket kept Kalama from celebrating at the end of regulation.
The Chinooks led 11-10 after one but the Spartans ralled to lead 21-18 at halftime. Kalama got one point back in the third quarter to trail 31-29 going into the fourth period.
It was 42-all after regulation and 49-49 at the end of the first overtime.
Braden Decker led the Spartans with 16 points while Brady Castellano added 10.
Kalama’s Josh Wall led everybody with 21 while Tanner Vossen and Elijah Bannister sank 12 each and Jared Neiman added 11.

SILVERDALE — The Warriors of Lakewood, ranked No. 2 in state at 17-4, were a little too much for the Wolves in the first round of the subdistrict playoffs Friday night at Klahowya High School.
The game was for seeding in the West Central District championships as well as a contest Saturday against Olympic League-champion Kingston (17-4), ranked 11th in state.
Results for Saturday’s game for a No. 3 district seed, played late Saturday afternoon, weren’t available by press time.
The Wolves (15-6), Olympic League runners-up, fell behind early to the Warriors and didn’t give up but couldn’t recover.
“I’m real proud of how hard our guys competed [Friday night],” Sequim coach Greg Glasser said.
Sequim outscored Clover Park 31-29 in the second half after trailing 37-24 at halftime.
Jayson Brocklesby and Corbin Webb led the Wolves with 18 points each while Gabe Carter added 13.
Clover Park’s Ahmaad Rorie scorched the nets for 27 points while Xavier Means sank 12 and David Crisp added 11.
Brocklesby and Carter hauled down 10 boards each.
“We really pounded the boards as a team,” Glasser said.
Kingston fell into the third-place game after losing 49-46 to Evergreen-Seattle on Friday night.

TUKWILA — The Spartans, ranked No. 6 in state, held off the Roughriders in the Class 2A subdistrict first round Friday night at Foster High School.
Port Angeles, 16-5, played for a No. 7 seed into the West Central District against Lindbergh in the second round late Saturday afternoon at Foster.
Results were not available by press time.
Sumner, 17-4, played White River on Saturday for the No. 5 seed to the district championships.
Details of the Port Angeles-Sumner game were not available.

White River 60, Port Angeles 41
LAKEWOOD — A nothing-for-14 in field goal-shooting in the third quarter sealed the Roughriders’ fate against state No. 5-ranked White River (20-2) in a subdistrict seeding game Thursday night at Clover Park High School.
Port Angeles (14-6), second in the Olympic League, took on Olympic League-champion Kingston (16-5) for a No. 3 seeding for the West Central District Tournament, on Saturday afternoon at Klahowya High School in Silverdale.
Kingston lost 59-46 to Renton in the first round Thursday night to drop into the No. 3-seeding game.

Against White River, Port Angeles coach Michael Poindexter said he made a mistake by using his press right off the bat against the run-happy team.
Poindexter tried to take White River out of its comfort zone by making the team run faster than it was used to.
“That backfired on me,” he said.
It didn’t help when the Riders went cold and couldn’t score a field goal in the third quarter.
Kiah Jones led the Riders with 14 points while Kennedy Hobert had a game-high 22 for White River.
Cassidy France added 16 points for White River.

Redskins not in playoffs
PORT TOWNSEND — The Class 1A Port Townsend Redskins practiced all week for the playoffs but were told late Thursday by league officials that they were eligible for the playoffs after all.
The Redskins tied for fifth place in the mostly 2A Olympic League with Klahowya and assumed they had earned a playoff berth.
They needed to finish in the top five, which they did, but were denied a playoff berth because the Eagles had beaten the Redskins twice during the season even though the two teams weren’t competing for the same playoff spot.
