PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles softball girls got huge games from Hope O’Connor, Madi Roening and Zoe Smithson and a solid pitching performance from Kiana Watson-Charles to 10-run North Mason 11-1 in five innings.
Tuesday’s win puts the Riders at 8-3 in league (10-7 overall) still with a chance for second place. Sequim is also 8-3 in league but has beaten Port Angeles twice. Port Angeles finishes its league season at home at 4:15 p.m. today against last-place Kingston, while Sequim finishes league play at Bremerton today.
Against North Mason, O’Connor and Roening both hit home runs, while Smithson went 3 for 3 with a double, a triple, three runs scored and two RBIs. Roening also had a double, went 2 for 2 with three runs scored and four RBIs. O’Connor was 2 for 3 with three runs scored and two RBIs.
Jada Cargo-Acosta was 1 for 3 with a double and 3 RBIs as the top of the Riders’ lineup (8 for 10, nine runs scored and 11 RBIs) did most of the damage.
On the mound, Watson-Charles pitched four innings, struck out eight and allowed one earned run on four hits. Ella Holland pitched a perfect fifth inning with no hits, no walks and one strikeout.

Quilcene 17, Rainier Christian 1
QUILCENE — The Rangers clinched a SeaTac 1B championship for the ninth straight year with a 17-1 rout of the Mustangs, which came in to Tuesday’s game undefeated in league.
The Coffey sisters were huge again for Quilcene. Natalie was 2 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs, while Madison was 4 for 4 with a double, a home run and three RBIs.
The Kieffer sisters were nearly as good. McKenzie Kieffer was 2 for 3 with a triple and two RBIs, while Marissa Kieffer was 2 for 4.
Scarlett McBride hit a pinch-hit triple and drove in three runs. Harmony Sholz also hit 3 for 4 with an RBI, while Lauren McCarthy drove in three runs on sacrifices.
“Our hitters put on a clinic today. From squaring up and driving the ball to hitting ground balls to the right rise with runners on third, to waiting for a good pitch to hit, our approach was right on,” said coach Mark Thompson.
“This team has come a long way from our first three games. For them to dominate the league like they did just shows how hard they worked and how bad they wanted it. Being defending league champions means something to them,” Thompson said.
Quilcene (7-0, 10-4), which owns the league tiebreaker, plays at Rainier Christian (6-1, 10-4) again today.

Hoquiam 13, Forks 12
FORKS — The Spartan girls got lots of offense and scored 12 runs on Hoquiam, but six errors allowed the Grizzlies too many unearned runs in a 13-12 league-ending loss.
The Spartans still qualify for postseason, but will now go in to the Southwest District 4 Tournament as a No. 4 seed out of the Evergreen 1A League.
“I was quite proud of the 12 runs. I’m not happy with the 13 runs,” said coach Dennis Dean Jr.
Dean said the most runs the Spartans had allowed all season before Tuesday was seven to Montesano and Elma.
“The good news is it’s all stuff you can fix,” Dean said.
Jayden Olson hit 3 for 5 with two doubles and five RBIs. Aspen Rondeau batted 3 for 4, while Rian Peters, Myah Rondeau and Chloe Leverington all went 2 for 5. One of Myah Rondeau’s hits was a double.
Forks (2-6, 7-8) has a couple of nonleague games left before postseason. The Spartans have senior night at 4 p.m. today for their final home game against Ocosta.
