SOFTBALL: Forks splits softball doubleheader with Ocosta

Spartans steal 20 bases in two games

BEAVER — No. 7 Forks split an important Pacific League softball doubleheader with No. 10 Ocosta at Fred Orr Memorial Park on Wednesday, riding Chloe Gaydeski-St. John’s two-hit shut out to a 4-0 win in game one and falling 7-6 to the Wildcats on an eighth-inning walkoff single despite Keira Johnson’s four-hits and six stolen bases.

Forks, playing as the visiting team in game two, took the lead in the top of the eighth when Kadie Wood reached on a leadoff error and scored on Johnson’s line drive double to right field. Johnson then stole third and home — her second steal of home plate in the game — for a 6-4 lead.

Johnson also tripled and scored and singled twice, scoring all four times she went to bat.

Ocosta scored on a sacrifice fly and walked it off with a two-out, two-run single to shortstop.

The Spartans and Wildcats were knotted in a 0-0 pitchers’ duel when Forks broke through in the bottom of the fifth in the first game.

Gaydeski-St. John walked to open the inning, stole second and scored on Fynley Peters bunt to the pitcher.

A lead-off bunt led to more offense in the bottom of the sixth.

Wood reached base with the bunt, stole second and third and came home on Elizabeth Soto’s hard grounder to shortstop.

Soto then stole third base and came home on a wild pitch for a 3-0 lead.

Kyra Neel finished things off with a double, moved to third on Gaydeski-St. John’s single and then stole home.

Forks (4-2, 7-3) visits Ilwaco on Tuesday.
