TACOMA — The Sequim soccer girls advanced past the knockout round with a 1-0 victory that came down to penalty kicks.
The Wolves (7-5, 11-6) ended regulation and overtime tied 0-0 with Steilacoom at Franklin Pierce High School in Tacoma Saturday. They finally prevailed on penalty kicks 5-4, sending the Wolves to the second round of the West Central District 2A Girls Soccer Tournament.
Claire Henninger earned the shutout, making nine saves.
The penalty kick scorers for the Wolves were Claire Henninger, Erin Vig, Yana Hoesel, Adare McMinn and Jessica Dietzman.
Sequim will now play White River Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Fife High School. The Hornets are a good team that went 14-1-2 playing in the South Puget Sound League. The Wolves must win one more match to qualify for the state 2A tournament, but now they are in double elimination.
There is a real possibility Sequim will end up playing Peninsula rival Port Angeles for the opportunity to go to state. If the Wolves lose Tuesday and the Roughriders lose their Tuesday match against Fife, then the Wolves and Riders will play at on Thursday with the winner going to state. The Riders and Wolves split two matches this season. If the Riders or Wolves win their Tuesday matches, they are automatically off to the state tournament.
Sequim Volleyball No. 2 seed to district
POULSBO — Sequim won its opening match at the Olympic League 2A Division tournament, but was not able to get past undefeated league champion North Kitsap, qualifying for the West Central District 2A Volleyball Tournament as a No. 2 seed.
Sequim (10-2, 13-3) easily handled No. 3 seed Kingston in its opening match Saturday 25-23, 25-19 and 25-11 behind some spectacular serving from Sydney Balkan. Balkan served 24-for-24 with eight aces and served 12 points in a row in the third set, which included seven of her aces.
“She really finished off Kingston,” said coach Jennie Webber-Heilman. Adrienne Haggerty also passed well, said Webber-Heilman, and finished the match with 17 digs.
“We played well as a team, they were solid,” she said.
In the second match, Sequim was beaten by the 15-1 Vikings 25-14, 25-14, 25-14.
Webber-Heilman said she’d rather be a No. 1 seed because a No. 2 seed has a bit tougher road to state. Sequim will begin district play going up against the No. 8 seed from the South Puget Sound League at around 3:30 p.m. Friday at Franklin Pierce High School in Tacoma. This is a match against a likely weak team that the Wolves expect to win, but if they do win, they will likely face Steilacoom in the second round.
