PORT ANGELES — Widespread snowfall has postponed tonight and Saturday’s schedule of West Central District 3 boys and girls basketball games.
This impacts the Port Angeles boys home game with Fife, originally scheduled for 7 p.m. tonight, and the Roughrider girls home contest with either Franklin Pierce or Eatonville previously set for Saturday night.
The Sequim girls defeated Lindbergh 47-28 in the tournament’s opening round Thursday night. As a result, the Wolves’ quarterfinal matchup with White River also is postponed.
The Port Townsend boys’ loser-out road trip to face Cascade Christian originally planned for Saturday, also has been shelved for now.
“The WCD Basketball tournament committee has determined it is in the best interest for the health and safety of all involved to cancel all WCD [Class] 1A and 2A and WCD/SWD 3A and 4A basketball tournament games scheduled for [today] and Saturday,” district board member and Sumner athletic director Tim Thomsen wrote in an email to district athletic directors.
“While we can’t control the weather, we can control our organizational planning to allow us to implement an appropriate, equitable solution for whatever day we are able to start the tournaments back up next week.”
Port Angeles athletic director Dwayne Johnson offered more information on the path forward.
“We are looking at a modified bracket,” Johnson said.
“Port Angeles girls and boys would play on the same night at 5:15 and 7 p.m. Thursday (to be confirmed).
“Winner of these games would advance to State and be seeding using RPI. Losers will have to play the brackets out on the next two nights and get on the bus.”
Class 1B Tri-District
Crescent’s Class 1B Tri-District Tournament boys basketball game set Saturday against Lopez has been postponed.
The Clallam Bay girls game against Rainier Christian has been moved to Monday, tentatively at Crescent.
The Quilcene girls also are scheduled to visit Grace Academy (Marysville) at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Tri-District Tournament director Jeff Droog of Mount Vernon Christian had some information on potential moves.
“If the Saturday games are postponed, they’ll be played Monday and if they are postponed Monday, those games will be moved to Tuesday,” Droog said.
Droog said that if weather has severe impacts on the Tri-District tournaments, semifinal and championship games may not be held.
“Games 7-10 (semifinals, final and third and fourth-place games) are for seeding purposes, so we wouldn’t have to play those games if the tournament is condensed,” Droog said.
Forks girls still scheduled
Forks’ Southwest District 4 girls basketball contest tonight at King’s Way Christian is still on as of 10:30 a.m. Friday.
The Spartans boys district game against King’s Way Christian is still planned for Hoquiam High School at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
Swimming canceled
A decision to cancel the Class 1A/2A West Central District Boys Swim and Dive Championships was made Thursday afternoon.
The event will not be made up.
The meet was condensed into a one-day event slated today at Lindbergh and Hazen high schools in Renton earlier this week, but the Renton School District is closing at noon today and no afterschool activities will be held.
Athletes will be seeded to state via the top seven places on each event’s psych sheet. District seed times will be taken into consideration when figuring out wildcards to state.
Gymnastics canceled
Thursday’s Class 2A/3A Sub-District Gymnastics meet in Dupont was canceled.
Athletes will advance to the Class 2A/3A West Central District 3 meet at Kent-Meridian High School on Friday.
PC twinbill postponed
Saturday’s Peninsula College men’s and women’s basketball home games against Edmonds have been postponed.
“We are closing our campus today at 12:30 p.m. and we won’t have staff available to clear the parking lot on Saturday, so it was determined that it would be unsafe for players and fans to be on site Saturday afternoon,” said Rick Ross, associate dean for athletics and student programs. “We will work with Edmonds to reschedule the games and will announce that time and date when it is determined.”
Wrestling
Regional wrestling tournaments across the state have been canceled, the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association announced Friday morning.
“To address these cancellations, the WIAA staff and event managers are developing a 32-entry WIAA Mat Classic tournament that will begin on Friday morning, Feb. 15. The details of that schedule will be released by early Monday.
Participants, parents and coaches are advised to work through their school administration with any further questions.
