Sequim qualifies 5 girls at district

KENT — Five Sequim gymnasts and a Port Angeles gymnast are moving on to the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association state meet after qualifying at the 2A/3A WCD III meet held at Kentlake High School this weekend.

The top 10 finishers in each event automatically move on to state. All five Sequim competitors made it to state, while Port Angeles’ Aiesha LaTourette will join them.

Sequim, Port Angeles and Crescent gymnasts train and compete together in the regular season.

Emma Sharp of Sequim had the highest area finish, coming in fifth in the balance beam with a score of 8.45 and fifth in the floor exercise with a 9.025. Gracie Sharp, also of Sequim, will go to state after finishing seventh with a score of 8.25.

Sequim’s Kori Miller finished seventh in the uneven bars with a 7.25 while Lesae Pfeffer of Sequim finished ninth in the balance beam with an 8.175.

Gracie Sharp and Miller tied for 10th in the vault with an 8.0.

In addition to the top 10 qualifiers in each event, other girls are invited to the state meet because slots open up in some events as gymnasts also go to state as members of state-qualifying teams or because they are going to state as all-around qualifiers.

Local gymnasts also qualifying for state in these slots include:

Vault — Emma Sharp, 7.95; Aiesha LaTourette, Port Angeles, 7.95.

Uneven bars — Gracie Sharp, 5.95; Danica Pearson, Sequim, 5.85.

Floor — Pfeffer, 7.45.

The top three teams at district were North Kitsap, first; Timberline, second and Highline, third.

The state gymnastics meet will be held Thursday through Saturday at Sammamish High School in Bellevue.
