SHOOTING SPORTS: Port Angeles Navy JROTC rifilists aim is true

PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps members have been busy honing their precision air rifle skills in recent months.

Cheyenne Maggard, Kaeden Murphy and Jenna Sanders of Port Angeles joined their Sabertooth Shooting Squad teammates James Hart and Alexis Kunze of Oak Harbor to win state championships at the Civilian Marksmanship Program’s three-position air rifle competition and the Junior Olympic’s three-position Washington state matches.

By virtue of winning the state championships, Sabertooth members qualified to compete at the Civilian Marksmanship Programs’s national three-position air rifle championship

Sabertooth members also recently finished fourth at the Apple Fest Washington state smallbore matches held in Wenatchee over Mother’s Day weekend.

All of the Sabertooth members shoot for their local high schools with Maggard, Sanders, Murphy and McCann making up the Port Angeles Navy JROTC precision air rifle team.

The quartet became the first-ever Port Angeles High School team to qualify for Navy nationals. They finished fifth overall at the Navy JROTC national match held virtually in March.

Team members shot targets at Port Angeles’ Peninsula Rifle and Pistol Club and then mailed them to the Civilian Marksmanship Program for scoring.

Hart and Kunze also competed in this event for Oak Harbor High School, with Hart winning the overall national championship as the top shooter in the nation. The pair also qualified for the Junior Olympics as individuals.

The squad will be fundraising for their trip to Ohio in the coming weeks.
