SEQUIM — Sequim swept the girls sprints and jump competitions on its way to a 71-51 track and field victory over rival Port Angeles on Wednesday in Sequim.
Junior Riley Pyeatt was a dual-event winner in the 100- and 400-meter races for the Wolves in 13.18 seconds and 59.29, respectively.
Sequim freshman Taryn Johnson was tops in the 200 in 29.49 and also won the 110 hurdles in 19.71. Johnson, along with Anastasia Updyke, Maci Cogburn and Rileigh VanDyken led the Wolves to a win in the 4×400 relay in 4:17.71.
Wolves freshman Jolene Vaara won the pole vault with a new best clearance of 7 feet and also triumphed in the high jump with a mark of 4-10.
In maybe the most anticipated race, Port Angeles’ Lauren Larson had enough in the tank to get past fellow cross country runner Pyeatt for a win in the 800. Larson posted a time of 2:18.93 to Pyeatt’s 2:31.21.
Larson also won the 1,600 by nearly 50 seconds.
Junior Kennedy Bruch also was a dual-event winner for the Riders, setting a personal record in the shot put with a throw of 29-9 and claiming the discus with a distance of 83-1.
Port Angeles senior Camille Stensgard also had a good meet, winning the javelin with a throw of 99-10 and setting a personal record in the discus (78-2).
In the boys portion of the meet, Port Angeles ran to victories in the 400 through 3,200 races and also performed well in the throwing events to earn a 76-54 win over Sequim.
Naaman McGuffey claimed the 800 (2:13.01), set a personal record in the 1,600 (4:52.66) and won an uncontested high jump with a new best of 4-8.
Sophomore Reef Gelder recorded a new best javelin throw of 120-01 to beat nine other competitors.
Junior Jason Gladfelter set a new fastest time in taking the 400 for the Riders in 59.28, while sophomore Jack Gladfelter broke his previous best time in the 3,200 (10:35.65).
McGuffey, Gladfelter, Gelder and Daniel Cable teamed for a win in the 4×400 relay in 3:53.18.
Logan Laxson was a three-event winner for the Wolves with the senior setting a new best of 19-9 in the long jump and also claiming the 100 and 200 sprints in 11.69 and 23.80, respectively.
Laxson teamed with Adrian Brown, Henry Hughes and Theo McMurray to win the 4×100 relay by just less than 5 seconds in 48.66.
The Riders and Wolves are off until an April 14 meet at Port Angeles with Olympic and East Jefferson.
