QUILCENE — The Quilcene football team got 100-yard games from Andrew Perez and Mason Iverson and Oliver Hopkins, then held on the fourth quarter to beat the Crescent Loggers 34-20.
Perez gained 135 yards rushing on 19 carries and had touchdown runs of 15 and 50, while Iverson had 132 yards rushing on 16 carries, with a 54 yard TD and a 22-yard touchdown reception. Hopkins had five catches for 100 yards, including a 21-yard touchdown.
Quilcene quarterback Dominic Smith passed 9-for-17 for 188 yards and two touchdowns.
The Loggers were led by Dominiq Sprague, who had the best game of his career with 82 yards rushing on 10 carries. Lukas Love had seven receptions for 101 yards and ran three times for 58 yards, including a 45-yard touchdown on a reverse. Quarterback Henry Bourm passed 13-for-28 for 148 yards and a touchdown. Conner Bauers had two touchdown runs of 12 and 3 yards.
Crescent coach Brian Shimko said the Loggers were hurt by four turnovers in the red zone.
“Four turnovers in the red zone. As far as I’m concerned, that’s four touchdowns you gave up,” Shimko said. He also said the Loggers struggled with their pass coverage with blown coverages, allowing Rangers receivers to get wide open.
On the positive side, Shimko said his defense played tough at times, forcing Quilcene to punt.
“I think in eight years of playing Quilcene, that was the first time they had to punt,” he said.
“They played hard, they didn’t quit,” Quilcene coach Trey Beathard said of Crescent. “They’re not that big, but they’re all going 100 miles an hour all game.”
Beathard was glad to see that, after a slow 0-3 start to the season, Quilcene got on the winning track. The Rangers also picked up another win last week with a forfeit over Charles Wright, which was short of players.
Beathard also said some unheralded players on defense deserved credit for the win.
“Tyler Beukes had an exceptional game on defense,” he said. Beukes finished with 13 tackles, including nine solo tackles and several passes defended.
Taylor Boling had eight tackles, several for losses. “He’s been hard for people to block,” Beathard said. Walter Beck had seven tackles and Perez seven tackles. Bauers had an interception for Crescent.
Quilcene (2-3) has a big challenge next week, playing 5-0 Darrington at 6 p.m. Friday on the road.
Crescent (2-2) plays at Tulalip Heritage (1-4) at 2 p.m. Saturday.
